The Hulk has always been a complex figure, walking the line between hero and villain. Initially, he was purely driven by rage and destruction, lashing out at everything around him. Even as he became more like an out-of-control child, people still saw him as a dangerous monster and hunted him. Despite this, he’s also been a valued member of heroic teams like the Avengers and Defenders, and has saved the world countless times – even more often than he’s put it in danger. Throughout his history, there’s always been a part of the Hulk, whether it was Bruce Banner or the Hulk himself, that didn’t want to fight. But that’s changed recently.
The last issue of the 2023 Incredible Hulk comic saw a dramatic turn when the Eldest forcibly split Bruce Banner from the Hulk, then took control of the Hulk’s body. She used this power to break the seal containing the Mother of Horrors, only to discover her mother was already dead. Undeterred, she still wanted to create a world ruled by monsters. By consuming the Mother’s remains, the Eldest transformed into the Infernal Hulk – a monstrous being fully controlling the Hulk and determined to destroy the world. Now, with no one able to intervene, and the Hulk himself ultimately responsible, the situation is dire.
Pushing Everyone Until They Leave

Throughout Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s run writing Incredible Hulk, the central idea was Hulk’s desire for complete isolation. He wanted to be rid of Bruce Banner and all other connections, so he rejected help even when the Eldest targeted the Fractured Son. Each transformation drove Banner further into the depths of their shared consciousness, with Hulk determined to erase him completely. The only person Hulk allowed to stay close was Charlie Tidwell, a young fan who would eventually become a monster herself after coming into contact with Lycanna’s flesh.
Despite offers of assistance from allies like Doctor Strange and Doctor Voodoo, the Hulk stubbornly refused help in his battle against the Eldest. He’d been deeply hurt by past betrayals, especially Banner’s recent transformation of him into a spaceship. Even after Doctor Voodoo saved him with a spell on Banner, Hulk wouldn’t ask for support, a decision that would prove fatal. The Eldest discovered she only needed the Hulk’s physical form, not Banner’s mind, and forcibly split them apart, taking control of the Hulk. His last words confirmed Banner’s fears.

The first issue of Infernal Hulk depicted the new King of Monsters violently destroying an entire army sent to contain him. He killed them all, leaving a gruesome scene, and even resurrected the soldiers as a zombie army led by a monstrous former comrade. Watching a news report about these events, one man wondered why there weren’t any monsters fighting for humanity. Bruce Banner saw the report, witnessed what his Hulk had become, and decided he’d had enough. Banner was finished with the Hulk.
A Monster Who Made His Own Bed

Man, it’s so frustrating watching the Hulk’s story! It all comes down to him pushing everyone away, you know? He wouldn’t let anyone help, not even the other heroes. And the way he trapped Banner inside their mind? It was awful, and it cost him his friendship with Charlie. Banner always tried to help, even when the Eldest offered him a way out, a new body without the Hulk. He knew he was the only one who could control things. But honestly, the Hulk’s constant anger and suffering just became too much for Banner to handle. Now, it’s clear Banner’s the best person to deal with the Infernal Hulk, but he just…won’t. It’s heartbreaking to watch!
Bruce Banner completely separated himself from the Hulk, leaving the creature utterly alone. While the Hulk always claimed to want solitude, he secretly longs for connection – for friends and family, like anyone else. But he fears getting close to others, believing it will only lead to heartbreak. He’s pushed everyone away, and now he’s achieved complete isolation, which is exactly what he dreads. In rejecting his human side, the Hulk has become a true monster. He had the potential for a better life, but that opportunity may now be lost forever.
