The Iconic Villain That Killed Superman is Officially the DC Universe’s Last Hope

Once a Superman killer, he’s now the DC Universe’s best hope against Darkseid. Every Superman fan remembers the famous battle where the Man of Steel fell to Doomsday. Though it happened 30 years ago, that event profoundly changed comics, introducing characters like Steel and Superboy, and proving that even Superman isn‘t invincible. Naturally, Superman eventually came back to life, as did the creature who originally defeated him.

Doomsday is a villain who keeps coming back, each time more powerful. Recently, in a big DC event, he evolved into something even stranger – a new form of the Time Trapper. This version has died and been reborn so many times that he’s become a massively powerful cosmic being, almost like a god. Luckily, after Darkseid attacked, Doomsday surprisingly became a valuable ally to the heroes. Now, it seems he might be the only one who can save the DC Universe.

Doomsday is the Last Line of Defense Against Darkseid’s Ultimate Victory

In the fourth issue of DC K.O., the final four fighters face off against Darkseid’s forces. Darkseid has brought forth the Absolute Trinity, twisting their minds to serve him. The Joker quickly switches sides, gaining parademon powers and attacking the remaining heroes. Luckily, Batman arrives to defeat the Joker, letting Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman each battle their corrupted counterparts from the Absolute Universe. The fight is intense, with each hero and their alternate proving to be a formidable match.

Luckily, Superman manages to free the Absolute heroes from Darkseid’s control by punching Booster Gold, who was possessed by Darkseid, in the face. But Darkseid isn’t finished – he quickly breaks free and unleashes his Omega Beams, defeating nearly everyone. Only Superman and Lex Luthor remain, and Superman suggests they work together. Lex, however, betrays Superman and tries to win the tournament on his own. With Superman down, Lex is declared the winner and becomes King Omega.

The book concludes with a glimpse into a future where Darkseid has taken over the world. He’s already put the pieces in place to dominate the present, having captured and brainwashed the Absolute heroes, and even taken control of Booster Gold. As a reward for her loyalty, Darkseid allows Saturn Girl to see into his mind, revealing his plans for ultimate victory. However, within this chaotic vision, Saturn Girl catches a fleeting image of the Time Trapper, described as a shining light.

Doomsday is Finally Going to Fulfill the Purpose He Was Made For

It might seem strange that Doomsday could save the universe, but DC Comics has been hinting at this possibility for some time. A recent story, Justice League: The Omega Act Special #1, revealed that Superman’s mother, Lara, found a hidden chamber on Krypton containing plans for a powerful weapon the ancient Kryptonians called their ‘Absolute Champion’. This idea resurfaced in Superman, where a holographic Lara explained to Lois Lane that Doomsday is essentially the counterpart to Darkseid, and therefore the only force capable of defeating him.

It’s unclear if Doomsday can actually defeat Darkseid at this stage. While this version of Doomsday – as the Time Trapper – is incredibly powerful, Darkseid has also become much stronger. We’ve already seen Darkseid, while possessing Booster Gold, defeat the Time Trapper during the ‘All-Fight Month’ event. However, despite his immense power, Darkseid still seems to fear Doomsday enough to believe the Time Trapper could somehow reverse his victory, even when things look hopeless.

Could Lex Luthor, as King Omega, give Doomsday the power boost he needs to defeat Darkseid? If successful, this would eliminate Darkseid and hopefully stop him from taking over the future. I’m not sure exactly how it would work, but I believe Doomsday will ultimately be the one to finish Darkseid off. It fits Doomsday’s purpose – a creature of evolution overcoming a being representing the end – and the idea is just too strong to ignore.
