The Inbetweeners’ James Buckley reveals hopes for Jay in his 30s as a comeback is rumoured

Tell us a little bit about your character in Finding Father Christmas.

I play Chris’s dad – Lenny Rush plays Chris. His mum isn’t around anymore, and my character, who everyone just calls ‘Dad,’ feels Chris is old enough to have ‘the talk’ about Santa Claus. It doesn’t quite go as expected, and they end up having a Christmas adventure together.

What was it like working with Lenny Rush? Having been a child actor yourself, did you share any advice with him?

He’s a bright and capable guy, so I don’t think he needs my input. As for Lenny, he’s the most cheerful person I know – always a joy to be around and makes me laugh a lot.

Greg Davies is in the film, too. Did you have a mini Inbetweeners reunion on set?

Greg filmed everything in a single day, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to be there and missed him. It was a shame, as I would have really enjoyed the chance to talk with him.

What’s the latest on the rumoured Inbetweeners comeback?

Honestly, I haven’t gotten any offers yet, but when I do, I’m going to really weigh my options. I’m not even going to start considering anything seriously until I have a clearer picture of what’s happening, you know? I need to see what the landscape looks like before I commit to anything.

Do you ever think about what Jay would be up to now, in his 30s?

I like to believe he’s maturing and becoming more typical. It seems like most boys go through a strange phase during their teens, but eventually they grow out of it.

What does your family Christmas look like?

We’ve always loved Christmases as a family, but with our sons now teenagers – 14 and 12 – I’m starting to feel like this year might be different. It’s funny how Christmas feels when you’re a child, then when you become a parent it’s exciting all over again. But I have a feeling those really magical, childlike Christmases are coming to an end, and that’s a little bittersweet.
