Well, folks, the Hollywood news cycle delivered a real shocker earlier this month. Taylor Sheridan, the creative force behind Yellowstone, is leaving Paramount – now under Skydance’s ownership – and heading over to NBCUniversal. From 2026, he’ll be focusing on films for them, and then, starting in 2028, he’ll be developing TV shows exclusively for Peacock. It’s not immediate bad news for Paramount, they still have a window to work with him, but this definitely feels like a significant shift in the landscape, and a loss for them down the line.
Now that the popular series Yellowstone, created by Taylor Sheridan, has finished, several spin-offs and related shows are still in production, with another one planned for release in 2026. While Paramount+ currently streams all of Sheridan’s projects, it wasn’t always obvious how much they relied on him to maintain their streaming service. Both fans of Sheridan’s work and industry observers predicted his move to a different streaming platform would be significant, and now concrete data confirms those expectations.
Taylor Sheridan’s TV Shows Boosted Paramount+ (And Now He’s Leaving)
Taylor Sheridan’s TV shows have generated over $800 million in streaming revenue worldwide, according to Parrot Analytics (via The Wrap). This figure includes revenue from shows on Paramount+ and other streaming services, and reflects the shows’ success in attracting new subscribers, retaining existing ones, and boosting the platform’s overall financial performance.
Parrot Analytics has released more data showing the financial success of Taylor Sheridan’s shows. Mayor of Kingstown and Tulsa King have earned nearly the same amount of revenue, with Mayor of Kingstown bringing in $147.8 million and Tulsa King earning $146.3 million. These two shows are leading the way, followed by Lioness at $119.9 million. The Yellowstone spin-offs, 1923 and 1883, have generated $92.1 million and $74.4 million respectively.
A key reason Sheridan creates so many shows is that Peacock streams the original Yellowstone, and it’s been a huge success, bringing in almost $130 million from international viewers. If Yellowstone had streamed on Paramount+ in the U.S., it likely would have earned significantly more.
Taylor Sheridan’s work is central to the success of Paramount+, formerly known as CBS All Access. Among all of the streaming service’s original shows, his creations – or those he’s helped create – are the only consistent hit. In fact, the only franchise that comes close to matching Sheridan’s impact is Star Trek, which has launched six shows on the platform in the last eight years, compared to Sheridan’s seven.
Ultimately, this situation highlights the financial impact of Taylor Sheridan’s move. While Paramount+ has benefited greatly from his shows – and will retain ownership of them, even future ones made without him – it’s clear audiences consistently tune in and remain subscribers as long as his content is available. Securing Sheridan could be exactly what Peacock needs to establish a consistent draw for their streaming service. However, Sheridan’s projects won’t be available on Peacock for at least three years, a significant delay in the competitive streaming landscape. Meanwhile, Paramount+ will continue to profit from his existing work for the foreseeable future.
