While Johnny Depp is known for many successful films, a 2018 animated movie he starred in, recently added to Paramount+, wasn’t a hit. The film, released shortly after his last Pirates of the Caribbean movie, performed poorly in theaters, earning only $90.5 million worldwide despite costing $59 million to make. It’s faded into obscurity, especially considering Depp’s more popular and critically acclaimed films like What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? and Edward Scissorhands.
You might have missed Sherlock Gnomes, the 2018 follow-up to Gnomeo & Juliet, which has been quietly available on Paramount+ since November 1st. This animated movie puts a fun, gnome-sized twist on the classic Sherlock Holmes stories. Johnny Depp voices the gnome version of the famous detective, who’s called in by Gnomeo and Juliet to investigate a string of missing gnomes in present-day London. Many of the original voice actors return, including James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Maggie Smith, Michael Caine, Ashley Jensen, Matt Lucas, Stephen Merchant, and even Ozzy Osbourne.
Sherlock Gnomes Is Just as Bad as You Remember
It’s probably best to forget about Sherlock Gnomes – it’s not a very good movie. Critics disliked it when it came out, calling it boring and a waste of time, and audiences quickly lost interest. With a low 28% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it stands out as one of the worst-received films in the careers of its stars, Johnny Depp and Emily Blunt, and it hasn’t improved over time.
Seven years after the release of Gnomeo & Juliet, Sherlock Gnomes didn’t live up to expectations and proved to be a disappointing sequel. The movie relied on a predictable story with a weak plot, and its constant gnome-related jokes and attempts to parody Sherlock Holmes fell flat with audiences of all ages. The characters weren’t particularly engaging either; Johnny Depp’s Sherlock Gnomes came across as irritating and self-centered, and many of the other talented voice actors were underused, ultimately wasting the cast’s potential.
While Sherlock Gnomes had slightly better animation than the original, it wasn’t a very good sequel and most people found it to be quite dull.
What’s New on Paramount+?
Paramount+ has added a bunch of new movies this November, and it’s not just Sherlock Gnomes. Now you can stream popular films like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and Titanic. They’ve also added entire series of films including Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, and Talladega Nights, giving subscribers plenty of options for movie night.
