DC’s Immortal Legend Batman is a truly unique take on the Dark Knight, and while it’s often compared to Power Rangers, it’s much more than that. This version of Batman exists in a science fiction future where he and his allies are immortal heroes fighting cosmic evil across the galaxy. Surprisingly, Batman’s classic enemies aren’t who you think they are – they were actually created by Bruce Wayne himself when he attempted to suppress his own inner demons. In this timeline, every iconic Bat-villain is a manifestation of Bruce Wayne’s darker side.
In Immortal Legend Batman #5, the creative team of Kyle Higgins, Mat Groom, Erica D’urso, and Igor Monti bring the story to a satisfying conclusion. Batman returns to the planet Gotham to confront his most dangerous enemy yet: a version of himself who has become the Joker. After building a deadly island lair, this Joker unleashes an army against the Immortal Weapons. As Batman prepares for a final showdown, he realizes he’s underestimated his foe – who manages to steal the Batman belt and effectively become the new Batman.

This Joker Wants to Destroy the Immortal Weapons’ Legacy

Immortal Legend Batman is a really fun and creative take on the Batman story, and the idea that Batman’s enemies are all dark reflections of Bruce Wayne himself is brilliant. The Joker, known as The Man Who Laughs, is the biggest threat, having already stolen Bruce Wayne’s money to create a terrifying island theme park and commit numerous crimes. Now, he’s taken the powerful Batman belt, giving him access to the abilities of all the Immortal Legends.
It’s not unusual for comic book villains to pretend to be heroes – we’ve seen teams like the Dark Avengers, who are essentially supervillains dressing up as characters like Spider-Man and Captain Marvel. Even classic stories like “Kraven’s Last Hunt” featured a villain impersonating Spider-Man, and Doctor Octopus once took over Peter Parker’s body to prove his superiority. However, the idea of the Joker becoming Batman to destroy Batman feels particularly exciting and fitting, especially given the current state of things.
The stunning artwork really makes Immortal Legend Batman stand out, giving it a dynamic and exciting energy. It’s one of the best alternate-universe Batman comics available today, and the story is shaping up to be truly epic. Issue #5 is a must-read, and you can find it now from DC Comics.
