The Jonas Brothers Kicked Off Kelly Clarkson’s New Show With A Story About Nick’s ‘Pretty Brutal’ Injury, And One Music Video Makes Way More Sense Now

By 2025, Kelly Clarkson has become a prominent figure across numerous NBC shows. However, she will be absent for part of the upcoming season of “The Voice” due to Brandon Blackstock’s passing. Despite this, her new show titled “Songs & Stories with Kelly Clarkson” premiered on August 19. This pre-recorded series finds the original “American Idol” winner delving deep into the lives of other music stars, beginning with the Jonas Brothers in the first episode. They certainly didn’t fall short, and among the tales they revealed to her was one about Nick being severely injured… just before the filming of the “Leave Before You Love Me” music video.

I hadn’t fully grasped the hilarious take on Nick Jonas’ injury until I heard the brothers narrate it during their chat with Kelly Clarkson. The story dates back to a 2021 NBC show, “Olympic Dreams Featuring Jonas Brothers,” where they attempted different Olympic events. As Joe put it, the concept seemed enjoyable “on paper,” while Kevin joked about being misled about what was in store for them. Then, Joe delved into the incident that occurred just before the “Leave Before You Love Me” video, explaining how Nick sustained his injury.

In retrospect of the music video, it appears that Nick remains stationary throughout, which might be due to the fact that the previous day we were shooting something else. Over the course of our career, we’ve donned quite a few peculiar hats, and on this particular occasion, we staged our own Olympic-themed competitions. Our most recent event was a motocross race, during which Nick suffered a fall, quite severe and grueling. Consequently, when we filmed the video the following day, Nick was still recovering and hence appeared immobile.

Agreed, Joe Jonas! Although I’m more familiar with the Backstreet Boys era, I did catch up on “Leave Before You Love Me” after its release in May 2021 and watched it again following the premiere of Songs & Stories. Upon revisiting the video, I noticed something interesting: Nick seems to move quite minimally compared to the other performances. I invite you to check it out for yourself!

During the Jonas Brothers’ collaboration with Marshmello, the song “Leave Before You Love Me” was a success, and the music video production went quite smoothly. It wasn’t until the episode of Songs & Stories that I realized Nick Jonas moved less than his brothers Kevin and Joe during filming. Interestingly, wrapping up the shoot didn’t mean that Nick could immediately relax at home. After Kevin mentioned that Nick had been using a cane due to injured ribs, Nick himself revealed that he needed to continue recovering from his injury.

At that moment, we were engaged with The Voice competition. Approximately three to four days afterward, I found myself on set when it seemed Blake Shelton believed I was overly expressive.

During Nick Jonas’ two seasons on The Voice, Kelly Clarkson served as a coach alongside him. As such, she reminisced about the time he got hurt on set. Moreover, she playfully jabbed at Blake Shelton, using language that was censored during the NBC broadcast due to its suggestive nature.

If you didn’t catch the NBC broadcast and are interested in watching the entire episode, you can find it streaming online starting on August 20, with a Peacock subscription. Even if you’re not a big fan of the Jonas Brothers, I think it’s worth checking out just to see Clarkson singing harmonies with them – it reminds us why she always delivers impressive “Kellyoke” covers.

The upcoming installments of “Songs & Stories with Kelly Clarkson” will still be broadcast every Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET, immediately after the live performances of “America’s Got Talent“. Originally, a total of four episodes were produced, however, notable personalities like Gloria Estefan (on August 26), Teddy Swims (a week later), and finally Lizzo, will be featured in these remaining shows.
