For the past two months, the DC event DC K.O. has been generating a lot of buzz for DC Comics. The groundwork for this story was laid over the last year, following the events of Absolute Power. DC has heavily invested in this storyline across numerous titles, including Justice League Unlimited, Superman, various Justice League miniseries, one-shots, and the Absolute line of books. It’s clear this event centers around Superman, given that both writers, Mark Waid and Josh Williamson, also work on the Superman titles and are key figures in the story. The current state of Superman is central to the plot, and it’s complicated his dynamic with Lex Luthor – a relationship that has recently become one of the most compelling aspects of the Superman mythos.
As a huge Superman fan, I was really invested in the unlikely partnership between Superman and Lex Luthor over the last few years. It started as a really tense, calculated alliance, but after Lex lost his memory, they genuinely seemed to become friends! It was amazing, but sadly, it didn’t last – Lex eventually remembered everything and left, though he did leave Superman in charge of LexCorp. It wasn’t a full-blown rivalry after that, just… complicated. But everything changed with DC K.O. The Justice League’s attempt to keep villains out of the King Omega Tournament completely ruined their relationship, and DC K.O. #2 pretty much showed it falling apart. It’s honestly heartbreaking, because seeing them work together was one of the best things about Superman lately.
Superman and Lex Luthor Make for an Amazing Team

The decades-long conflict between Superman and Lex Luthor is legendary and deeply ingrained in popular culture. Even people unfamiliar with comics know that Lex Luthor despises Superman. Their animosity is a constant presence, creating tension whenever they interact, which makes their stories so engaging. Recently, this dynamic has become even more fascinating. In the 2023 Superman series, Lex, while imprisoned for murder, surprisingly handed everything over to Superman – a move that was clearly part of a larger plan, but resulted in a compelling narrative.
The story featured an unlikely alliance against the new villains, Dr. Pharm and Graft. While Lex Luthor and Superman have a long-standing rivalry, this collaboration showcased them at their peak. It was enjoyable to read, and the dynamic really shined as Superman began to trust his former enemy. Knowing Luthor’s history, Superman was understandably cautious, but he hoped Luthor would finally use his intelligence to benefit the world. The arc, which began nearly three years ago, has been fantastic, especially after Luthor’s memory was altered, leading to a genuine friendship. Ultimately, it achieved its goal: making readers appreciate the unique bond between Superman and Lex.
It wasn’t surprising that Superman and Lex Luthor became enemies again – their rivalry always seemed destined to return. However, the way it happened was unexpected. Many fans, myself included, thought Lex would be the one to break their truce, but it turns out Superman and the Justice League are to blame. Lex regained his memories and intentionally removed himself from the situation. Superman, believing Lex wasn’t a threat, surprisingly left him alone and gave him space.
The King Omega tournament was crucial, and the heroes couldn’t let a villain win. So, Superman and the Justice League used special T-spheres to track down the villains and send them to the Phantom Zone. In DC K.O. #1, Lex Luthor was shocked to realize he was being betrayed by someone he trusted – he never expected Superman to approve such a move, and it deeply affected him. Fortunately, Grodd’s telepathic connection had prepared him, and Lex vowed to get revenge on Superman. This desire for payback drove the most exciting moments in DC K.O. #2.
Superman Betrayed Lex Luthor and Luthor Isn’t Happy

A fascinating aspect of the DC K.O. story is Superman’s initial reluctance to participate. He didn’t want to join a tournament that required the same brutality as Darkseid, understanding the toll it would take on the heroes and hoping for a different solution. He even hesitated when Mister Terrific used the T-spheres to capture the villains, believing the moral cost was too great. The biggest consequence so far has been losing Lex Luthor’s respect.
Superman and Lex Luthor used to be sworn enemies, and while they never became friends, they eventually worked together, especially after teaming up to save the world. However, that uneasy alliance is over. The Justice League has made Superman turn against Luthor, and now Superman is seeking revenge in the tournament. This has already put him at risk of losing, and the Superman-centered event, DC K.O., is already having a major impact on his chances.
DC K.O. #2 is on sale now.
