The original members of the Justice League are some of the most recognizable superheroes ever created, each starring in countless comics and stories. Ever wondered which of these seven heroes has actually appeared in the most issues? While you might have a guess, I decided to check the official DC Database to find out exactly how many times each member has appeared in both the New Earth and Prime Earth universes. Keep reading to see where your favorite ranks!
7. Martian Manhunter

I like Martian Manhunter a lot, but I always suspected he wouldn’t be one of DC’s most popular heroes. While he’s a central figure in the Justice League, he hasn’t appeared in as many comics as you might think – around 1694 times. That’s a decent number, especially considering how quickly he’s been brought back to life after dying, but it still leaves him at the very bottom of the list. He’s a fantastic character, but he just hasn’t resonated with readers the way some others have.
6. Aquaman

Everyone generally agrees that Martian Manhunter is the only reason Aquaman isn’t ranked last. While Aquaman has consistently appeared in comics for years, with over 2100 appearances across different storylines, he hasn’t built as large a fanbase as some other heroes. This leaves him with the second-fewest appearances overall – he’s not failing, but he’s definitely lagging behind.
5. The Flash

Just ahead of Aquaman in terms of appearances is the second Flash, Barry Allen, with 2239 appearances across the New Earth and Prime Earth universes. This isn’t too surprising considering Barry famously died during the ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ event and wasn’t featured in comics for over two decades, with his nephew, Wally West, taking his place. If Barry hadn’t sacrificed himself, he likely would have appeared in many more stories. However, his 23-year absence naturally explains why his total number of appearances is a bit lower than some other heroes.
4. Green Lantern

Green Lantern also experienced a significant drop in appearances after his well-known storyline where he became a villain. According to the DC Database, Hal Jordan has only appeared a little over 2,500 times across the New Earth and Prime Earth continuities. His transformation into Parallax and subsequent fall from grace opened the door for Kyle Rayner to become the new Green Lantern. Although Hal Jordan continued to appear as the Spectre for a time, his period as a villain caused him to miss out on many appearances.
3. Wonder Woman

We’re now looking at the most prominent members of the Justice League, and Wonder Woman is definitely one of them. As a cornerstone of the DC Universe and arguably the most iconic female superhero, she’s appeared in around 2,933 comics across both versions of DC’s history – which isn’t surprising, given how consistently popular and important she is. Wonder Woman is a key member of many teams and major storylines. Although she’s only had one ongoing comic series of her own, while some heroes have multiple, her total number of appearances still puts her among the top three most featured heroes, which is great news for her fans.
2. Superman

Superman has appeared an impressive 4,900 times across the New Earth and Prime Earth universes. While it’s surprising he isn’t number one, nearly 5,000 appearances is still a huge feat! He shows up everywhere – in his own comics, team-up books, major events, and even alongside characters like Spider-Man. Though he may not be promoted quite as much as Batman, Superman fans can rest assured that he’ll always be a key figure in the DC Universe.
1. Batman

As expected, Batman is the Justice League member who’s appeared in the most comic books – a total of 6426! It’s not surprising, considering how consistently Batman and Detective Comics have been published over the years, and how many Bat-Family titles DC currently releases. Honestly, Batman sells well, so it makes sense DC features him so prominently. With numbers like that, it’s safe to say he’ll remain the most-published Justice League member for a long time to come.
