Superman is currently experiencing a resurgence, and DC Comics is making every effort to present the Man of Steel in the best possible light. Issue #1 of Superman Treasury 2025: Hero for All showcases the kind of Superman comic that appeals to all readers. The main storyline is straightforward and full-on Superman – an alien invasion, led by characters known to ’90s Superman fans, threatens Earth, and Superman does his utmost to save the day. However, it’s not as simple as that. Although it’s a Superman story, issue #1 of Superman Treasury 2025: Hero for All also explores how the entire superhero community responds when Superman disappears, and readers are treated to an epic scene – the demolition of the Justice League Watchtower satellite base.
As a die-hard fan of superhero sagas, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as we delve into the third Justice League satellite, a pivotal piece of their cosmic operation that regained its spotlight in the outstanding “Justice League Unlimited” #1. The headquarters of these extraordinary beings play a crucial role in tales like ours, and the captivating “Superman Treasury 2025: Hero for All” #1 serves as an ideal blueprint for a superb superhero narrative.
However, the demise of the Watchtower seems more like a narrative trick than a significant plot point, reminiscent of the destruction in the lead-up to “Infinite Crisis.” It’s undeniably an exciting aspect of the story, yet it leaves me wondering about its impact on the overall narrative. Will it matter in the grand scheme of things? Only time will tell.
Writers Often Destroy Superhero Headquarters for Shock Value
Superhero bases are an essential element in the world of superheroes, much like Batman’s Batcave or Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. They serve not only as a home but also as a symbol for each hero. For instance, without their respective bases, the X-Men wouldn’t have developed that family vibe, and the Avengers would lack the iconic Avengers Mansion (though they’ve had other notable locations like the Hydrobase).
Throughout history, we’ve seen various superhero teams change their bases. The Justice League, for example, started with Mount Justice in Rhode Island, which is still standing and has been used by several teams since the League left. They later had a satellite base, destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, most notably during “Crisis on Infinite Earths” and the first story arc of JLA.
The League also experimented with an embassy system where multiple countries housed Justice League embassies, followed by the Watchtower on the moon. However, this Watchtower was destroyed by Superboy-Prime. After that, they had two bases concurrently – the Hall of Justice on Earth and a new Watchtower. Both were eventually destroyed at different points in time.
The current Watchtower is modeled after the one from the Justice League Unlimited cartoon, and its destruction was a shocking moment. However, I don’t think this latest base destruction will have the same impact as some of the others have had in the past.
As a dedicated moviegoer who’s deeply immersed in superhero comics, I’ve come to understand that sometimes creators temporarily “pass the torch” on iconic elements to make an adversary seem more formidable. This is clearly the case in Superman Treasury 2025: Hero for All #1, where the Watchtower was destroyed to demonstrate the sheer power of the invading fleet and their determination. The destruction of the Justice League’s headquarters serves as a grim reminder of the threat they pose to our planet. Superman ultimately manages to vanquish these invaders, but it’s clear that the Watchtower will be rebuilt. Unfortunately, those who haven’t read Superman Treasury 2025: Hero for All #1 won’t know of its destruction, which is a bit disheartening because previous instances of the Justice League losing their base have had significant consequences. However, in this case, it seems unlikely to make any real impact on the storyline. Frankly, it’s a tad underwhelming when you get down to it.
The Destruction of the Watchtower Sends the Wrong Message to New Readers
While perusing the comic book “Superman Treasury 2025: Hero for All #1″, it was evident that this story was tailored to novice readers who’ve recently stepped into a comic book store inspired by the movie version of Superman. The narrative caters exceptionally well to these newcomers, but unfortunately, there’s a discrepancy – the apparent destruction of the Watchtower. This inconsistency may cause confusion for new readers who choose to explore subsequent issues like “Justice League Unlimited“, as they might find the Watchtower still intact without any clear explanation of the events from “Superman Treasury 2025: Hero for All #1″. Instead, they may only encounter a brief mention or caption box at the beginning of the issue.
A notable difference between contemporary superhero comics and their movie counterparts lies in how storylines develop over time. In superhero films, events like these are often revisited or alluded to in subsequent sequels. However, this practice has waned significantly in recent years within the pages of Marvel and DC comics, particularly Marvel, due to a lessened emphasis on continuity by their editors. This means that while such scenes can be engaging, they may not be ideal for comics intended to attract new readers who might find it challenging to follow the narrative without prior knowledge.
