I’ve been following Kasing Lung’s Labubus for over a year now, and I was so excited to hear the news! Pop Mart, the company behind these amazing, fuzzy little toys that blew up on social media, is teaming up with Sony Pictures to make a movie about them. It’s a dream come true for fans like me!
According to a press release on March 19th, the companies announced that the movie will combine live-action footage with computer-generated imagery to bring the playful world of LABUBU to life on the big screen, as reported by Business Insider.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m keeping a close eye on this exciting new project, and even though it’s early days, the team behind it is seriously impressive! I’m thrilled to share that Paul King, the director behind the delightful Wonka, is at the helm, and he’s collaborating with Steven Levenson, the incredibly talented writer of Dear Evan Hansen. They’re also getting support from some major players – Michael Shafer, known for The Martian, and rising star producer Wenxin She – all as executive producers. It’s a fantastic creative lineup, and I have a feeling this is going to be something special!
It makes perfect sense that Kasing is involved in the new movie, since he first created the Labubu character in his 2017 book, The Monsters. The design was already interesting, but Labubu really took off when Pop Mart turned it into a collectible toy in 2019. The popularity exploded five years later, boosted by celebrities like Lisa from Blackpink, Simone Biles, and Kylie Jenner, who were seen carrying the toys as accessories.
Lisa explained to Vanity Fair that whenever she travels – whether it’s to New York, Paris, or anywhere else – she makes a point of searching for Pop Mart stores, describing it as a treasure hunt.
Celebrities and fans alike began to see these mystery boxes as collectibles, proudly displaying their Labubu collections – both common and rare versions – online. This huge surge in popularity led to a significant increase in the wealth of Pop Mart’s CEO, Wang Ning, who Forbes reported was worth $22.1 billion last year.

Emily Brough, Head of Licensing for Pop Mart North America, announced that the collectible figures brought in over $419 million in sales during 2024.
We’re amazed by how popular Labubu has become, especially with the recent ‘Into Energy’ release! It’s fantastic to see people all over the world enjoying our playful and charming Labubu character, as our executive shared.
