HBO is continuing its working relationship with Craig Mazin, the creator of The Last of Us, despite the current season likely being the show’s final one.
The show was renewed for a third season in April 2025, even before the second season premiered. Craig Mazin then became the sole showrunner, taking over after Neil Druckmann stepped down from that role.
Casey Bloys, head of HBO and Max Content, told TopMob that the next season of the show, which will focus on the character Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever), is likely to be the last.
From what I gather, Daniel Craig is leaning towards that being his final Bond film, though they always keep their options open. That’s definitely where his head seems to be at, if you ask me.
With the current series nearing completion, Mazin will be able to start working on other projects, such as a television show based on Baldur’s Gate. However, Bloys mentioned Mazin won’t begin adapting the video game until he’s finished with The Last of Us.
“Anything that Craig is interested in, I’m interested in,” Bloys said of the Baldur’s Gate series.
I’m so excited to hear he’s already thinking about what’s next! He’s totally immersed in season 3 of The Last of Us right now, which is awesome, but he actually pitched the idea of working on Baldur’s Gate to us. He’s really enthusiastic about it, and we’ve had some great conversations about it. He wants to give The Last of Us his full attention first, and then he’ll come back to Baldur’s Gate when he has more bandwidth. It sounds like it’s definitely something he’s interested in!
The Baldur’s Gate video game series is based on the world of Dungeons & Dragons. However, the upcoming television show won’t be based on existing games. Instead, it will continue the story, picking up right after the events of the latest game, Baldur’s Gate 3.
Filming for the third season of The Last of Us started this month, March 2026, and the new episodes are planned for release in 2027. Bella Ramsey and Isabela Merced will be back as stars, and Jason Ritter, Patrick Wilson, and Clea DuVall are joining the cast.
I just heard some news about the movie! Jorge Lendeborg Jr. is taking over the role of Manny – apparently, Danny Ramirez had some scheduling issues, so Jorge is stepping in. I’m excited to see what Jorge brings to the part!
The second season ended with a shocking cliffhanger, leaving viewers wondering what will happen to Ellie after a violent confrontation with Abby.
