This year, the Emmy Awards have nominated the second television adaptation of HBO’s The Last of Us for a total of 16 categories.
Although the last episode sparked debate among gamers, the overall series of seven episodes was so compelling that the Television Academy nominated it sixteen times. This is eight fewer nominations compared to the first season, yet it’s expected to be considered a victory for HBO.
The Last of Us season two has been nominated in the following categories:
- Best Drama Series
- Best Actor in a Drama Series (Pedro Pascal)
- Best Actress in a Drama Series (Bella Ramsey)
- Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series (Joe Pantoliano + Jeffrey Wright)
- Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series (Kaitlyn Dever + Catherine O’Hara)
- Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program
- Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series
- Outstanding Picture Editing for a Drama Series
- Outstanding Contemporary Makeup
- Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup
- Outstanding Music Supervision
- Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series

It has been confirmed that additional seasons of HBO’s The Last of Us will be produced, delving into Abby’s storyline as seen in The Last of Us Part II. However, creators Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross have recently announced their departure from the TV show. Druckmann is now focusing on Naughty Dog’s video games, while Gross is working on different projects.
In our assessment of the last episode in the second season, we found: “It’s an enjoyable adaptation – offering a blend of fun and serious post-apocalyptic storytelling – that compromises structurally for the medium, and alterations from the original source that diminish its impact.
