A new Avatar: The Last Airbender movie is coming out this year, and the director recently discussed its release. Instead of being shown in theaters as initially intended, the movie will be available exclusively through streaming. This project is the first of many new animated stories being developed by the original creators, Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, who have rejoined forces at Avatar Studios with Paramount and Nickelodeon to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original series.
Originally planned for a theatrical release this fall, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will now premiere exclusively on Paramount+. Director Lauren Montgomery expressed their disappointment with the decision on social media, stating that the film “deserves to be seen on a big screen!” This announcement followed confirmation earlier this year from Nickelodeon and Paramount Movies about the change in distribution plans, coinciding with the film wrapping production.
New Avatar: The Last Airbender Movie Director Reacts to Streaming Release vs. Theaters
Director Montgomery has confirmed that filming for The Last Airbender is finished. He shared that the team recently watched the movie – a project they’ve been working on for years – and called it amazing, though he admitted his opinion might be biased. He also confirmed the film will no longer be released in theaters as initially planned.
The director explained that the decision to release the film on streaming instead of in theaters shouldn’t be seen as a reflection of its quality. They believe it’s a fantastic movie meant to be experienced on the big screen and are excited for audiences to finally see it. Others involved with the film and fans have expressed similar enthusiasm. Viewers will now need to wait until the new Avatar: The Last Airbender premieres on Paramount+ in October.

Fans can expect The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender to premiere on Paramount+ this October, though a specific date hasn’t been revealed yet. The film is directed by Lauren Montgomery and Steve Ahn, with original creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko involved through Avatar Studios. It takes place in the timeline between The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.
The upcoming live-action film, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, will show Aang and the familiar characters as adults facing a brand new conflict. The original voice actors won’t be reprising their roles; instead, the film features a new cast including Eric Nam as Aang, Steven Yeun as Zuko, and Dave Bautista, alongside Jessica Matten, Dionne Quan, Román Zaragoza, Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Dee Bradley Baker, Peta Sergeant, Freida Pinto, and Ke Huy Quan. Their specific roles haven’t been officially announced yet.
