Fans were disappointed earlier this month when the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender was moved from theaters to be a Paramount+ streaming exclusive. A petition started by fans, hoping to convince the studio to release the film in cinemas, gained momentum. Initially, a comment appeared on the petition that many thought was from co-director Steve Ahn. However, Ahn quickly clarified that he did not write the comment and also shared his thoughts on the petition, which has already collected over eighteen thousand signatures.
Steve Ahn recently addressed a Change.org petition related to Avatar. He expressed gratitude for the support but clarified that someone falsely posted a comment using his name. He wants to make it clear he didn’t write the comment and hopes this stops any further misunderstandings. He was especially concerned that the post suggested future action and wanted to prevent any unfair criticism or hardship for the artists involved due to this unauthorized activity.
The Comment That Started it All

A comment posted on the petition was originally credited to Steve Ahn, but it doesn’t appear to be a statement from him directly. The comment, from someone who worked on the film and eventually became a director, expressed frustration with decisions made by studio executives. The commenter mentioned numerous unfair actions during production and wants to share details later, but is primarily urging the immediate re-release of the film in theaters.
Fans aren’t the only ones upset about the decision to release the new Legend of Aang movie directly to streaming. Animator Tom Barkel, who has worked on shows like Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Owl House, and was also part of the original The Last Airbender team, expressed his disappointment. He said he was “devastated” as both a fan and someone who worked on the film, adding that everything he’s seen looks amazing and deserved a theatrical release.
Despite recent developments within the Avatar fandom, the live-action adaptation from Paramount is still scheduled for release next October. In addition to the actors already cast as Aang and his companions, Paramount has announced Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Dee Bradley Baker, Peta Sergeant, Freida Pinto, and Ke Huy Quan will also be joining the cast.
