The Legend of Zelda Report Reveals Nintendo’s Massive Plans for 2026

The classic video game series “The Legend of Zelda” began 39 years ago, with its 40th anniversary approaching next year. It’s rumored that Nintendo has big plans to commemorate this milestone, yet so far, there have been minimal celebrations for Mario’s 40th anniversary this year. Although it’s possible things might change before the end of the year, time is running short for such festivities to occur.

A newly released report suggests that Nintendo insider, Nash Weedle, who recently discussed various topics on the Attack the Backlog podcast, has shared some intriguing details. Among them was information regarding a planned marketing campaign to celebrate the anniversary of The Legend of Zelda series. The campaign is set to kick off in January 2026 and continue throughout the entire year. Multiple dates and announcements related to the franchise are expected, but it remains unclear how many of these announcements will be for new games. The report does not provide any further details beyond this revelation.

Potential Announcements

Anticipating Nintendo’s forthcoming 40th anniversary celebrations for The Legend of Zelda, it’s likely that these events will be filled with a rich sense of nostalgia. This could potentially mean the release of much-speculated remasters, such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and The Wind Waker.

As we approach the launch of “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment” this year, it’s possible that updates and additional content, such as downloadable content (DLC), may be introduced for the game in the following years. Similarly, it’s likely that DLC for “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” will also be developed after its release.

It’s highly unlikely that we’ll see the next major installment of the Zelda series soon. The sequel to Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, was revealed five years after its release, and considering it’s set to come out in 2026, it seems too early for the announcement of another mainline game. However, smaller spin-offs could be on the horizon. For instance, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom from 2024 didn’t quite capture everyone’s attention, but a game with a retro feel inspired by older Zelda games might be appropriate for anniversary celebrations. Lastly, don’t forget about the upcoming trilogy of Zelda movies being developed at Sony Pictures.

Taking everything into account, it’s important to note that we currently lack any formal updates. Until new information emerges, please approach speculations with a touch of skepticism. In the interim, as is customary, don’t hesitate to share your thoughts in the comments below. I’m curious to hear what features or elements you’d like to see in celebration of the potential 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda!
