The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s Story Was “Held Back” for Age of Imprisonment

Hidemaro Fujibayashi, director of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, explained why the game didn’t delve as deeply into the story of the Sages as the spin-off Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. In an interview with 4Gamer (reported by Nintendo Everything), Fujibayashi said Nintendo intentionally saved many of the details about the Sages for Age of Imprisonment to be revealed there first.

In Tears of the Kingdom, the Sages were initially presented as mysterious figures with hidden faces and unknown names. Interestingly, these characters received more development and screen time in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, a game set before the events of Tears of the Kingdom. That title revealed the Sages to be Ardi (Gerudo), Qia (Zora), Raphica (Rito), and Agraston (Goron).

According to director Hidemaro Fujibayashi, a key element of Tears of the Kingdom‘s story involved the Sages, who were intentionally presented without names or visible faces. He explained that revealing more about their personalities and appearances would have made the story too complex, so details were deliberately kept hidden. Fujibayashi expressed satisfaction that players have paid close attention to the Sages and their role in the game’s Imprisoning War.

It wasn’t surprising to learn that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment would cover events leading up to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, as the game was advertised as telling a previously unknown story. The game launched on Nintendo Switch 2 in November and had a trailer released on the same day.

In Age of Imprisonment, the story centers on Zelda being sent back in time to a Hyrule on the brink of war with the Demon King Ganondorf. There, she meets King Rauru and Queen Sonia, the rulers of that era. Zelda must join forces with the Sages, a Korok, and other allies – including someone who looks remarkably like Link – to fight against Ganondorf’s army.

Eiji Aonuma, producer of The Legend of Zelda, has discussed how Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment was a valuable project created with Koei Tecmo. He suggested this collaboration could influence the development of future Zelda games, stating, “The ideas we gained from working with Koei Tecmo might show up in the next Zelda game.” He encouraged players to keep that in mind while enjoying Age of Imprisonment and to anticipate what’s next for the Zelda series.

Yusuke Hayashi, the head of the studio behind Age of Imprisonment, explained that the game started with a desire to blend the strategic gameplay of classic Zelda titles with the fast-paced, action-packed feel of a musou game. He said they wanted players to experience both the careful planning of using Zelda’s Zonai devices and techniques against tough enemies, and the satisfying power of defeating large groups of weaker foes, which is a hallmark of musou games.
