The DC Universe is generating a lot of buzz, even though no new movies or shows have been announced. Rumors that Netflix is trying to buy Warner Bros. Discovery have people concerned that Netflix might overhaul the entire DC lineup and start fresh. Some fans, however, are hopeful that this potential deal could bring back Zack Snyder’s vision for DC – often called the ‘Snyderverse.’ While there’s no concrete proof, Snyder himself has said he’d be interested in returning if Netflix owned the DC characters, and his supporters are clinging to that possibility.
While many are excited about the possibility of Zack Snyder returning to direct DC films, current signs suggest James Gunn’s DC Universe is progressing steadily with its plans. Marketing for Supergirl is increasing as its July 2026 release date approaches, and Lanterns, despite a delay, looks promising. Although 2026’s projects seem secure, significant decisions about the future will need to be made in the spring of 2027.
Bloomberg reports that DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have contracts extending through spring 2027. Their original agreements ran through 2026, so their terms have been extended. However, this longer commitment may not be significant considering the recent acquisition, as plans are likely to shift once the deal is fully finalized.
The DCU Could Look Very Different in 2027

If Netflix acquires Warner Bros. Discovery, movies will likely still be shown in cinemas, but for a much shorter time than before. The goal seems to be a quick, thirty-day window for films to earn money in theaters, which is a challenge. Netflix believes that releasing new movies quickly on its own streaming services – Netflix and potentially HBO Max – will attract more subscribers.
James Gunn might not agree with this new arrangement, but he’ll need to work with Netflix if he wants to continue making successful films. Fortunately, his next project, Man of Tomorrow, is scheduled to start filming in spring 2026 – well before Netflix finalizes the acquisition. This means Netflix won’t be involved in the sequel’s contracts, and a traditional theatrical release is highly probable.
By the summer of 2027, James Gunn and Peter Safran will need to negotiate a new contract, or their work on DC films and shows might come to an end. However, given the success they’re having with both movies and television, it seems likely they’ll continue their partnership.
