The Long-Term Future of HBO’s 10/10 Masterpiece Looks Secure With Over 15 Billion Minutes Viewed

HBO is having a successful 2026, with shows like Season 5 of Industry and the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms receiving positive reviews. While HBO has always been known for high-quality television, its dominance has been challenged recently as popular shows like Game of Thrones and Succession have finished, and other streaming services have become more competitive.

Recently, HBO has regained its position as a leading television network, largely thanks to the success of the show The Pitt. This medical drama, starring Noah Whyle and set in a Pittsburgh hospital, quickly became a hit and was considered one of the best shows of 2025. It won an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series after its first season and returned strong in early 2026, as shown by recent Nielsen ratings. Viewers watched The Pitt for an impressive 1.133 billion minutes during the week of April 6-12, making it the most-watched show and bringing its total for the season to over 15 billion minutes.

The Pitt Is Key To HBO’s Future

As a film and TV fan, I’m really excited to see how well The Pitt is doing with viewers! It’s great that the show has been critically acclaimed – all those awards, including the Golden Globe, and a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes speak for themselves – but ultimately, a show needs people to watch it to stay on the air. These numbers are a fantastic sign, and honestly, with this kind of success, I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes on for many seasons beyond the already confirmed third one. It’s just really promising to see a quality show also finding a dedicated audience.

This show could be a big deal because it feels like a return to a classic style of television rarely seen on streaming services. It combines the high-quality acting and production of shows like those on HBO with the week-to-week, case-of-the-week format of older medical dramas, particularly resembling ER. A key to the success of shows like ER and Grey’s Anatomy was their longevity – often running for ten seasons or more, with Grey’s still on the air. While there’s no guarantee The Pitt will achieve that same run, its format and early success make it a real possibility.

It’s a welcome change to have a premium show you can really settle into. The Pitt features long seasons with 15 episodes, combining ongoing storylines with smaller, self-contained arcs and individual episode plots. Crucially, the show consistently returns at the same time each year, which feels like a throwback to traditional TV and helps keep viewers engaged. For HBO, having a critically acclaimed, award-winning series that reliably returns annually is a major advantage when many shows now have gaps of two or three years between seasons. This consistency should only increase The Pitt‘s popularity in the years to come.

The Pitt Seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream now on HBO Max.
