Warhorse Studios, the team behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance, may be developing a new open-world game set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings universe. A Polish gaming industry expert, Ryszard Chojnowski, recently mentioned on a podcast that he’s heard from reliable sources linking Warhorse to the previously rumored Lord of the Rings game. The information was first noticed by a ResetEra user named Hiberner Toujours.
It’s important to remember that Embracer Group and its subsidiary, Revenge, were connected to this project. Warhorse Studios is owned by PLAION, which is itself part of Embracer Group. Additionally, Embracer Group has owned the rights to create a video game based on The Lord of the Rings since 2022.
A report from September revealed that the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) has invested $100 million in the game’s development, with the deal apparently being negotiated for about a year beforehand. Embracer Group, the game’s publisher, hasn’t confirmed or denied the report, stating they generally don’t comment on rumors. The report also suggests the game, based on The Lord of the Rings, will be a direct competitor to Hogwarts Legacy, offering a large, open-world experience within a popular fantasy universe.
If the recent reports are accurate, Warhorse’s upcoming Lord of the Rings game could be the most expansive and ambitious project the franchise has ever undertaken. The last time we saw a game of this scope based on Tolkien’s world was the 2007 MMORPG, Lord of the Rings Online. Since then, most adaptations have been smaller in scale, focusing on just one or two parts of the story.
As a gamer, I’ve seen Lord of the Rings pop up in all sorts of games – from big strategy titles like the Battle for Middle-earth series, to even the MOBA scene. I remember being really excited when Monolith tried to make open-world LOTR games with Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. They were cool, especially that Nemesis system everyone loved, but honestly, they felt different from what a studio like Warhorse Studios would create. Warhorse is known for really deep, realistic game systems, and I think they could bring something totally unique to Middle-earth.
The latest video game inspired by Tolkien’s world is Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game, released in July 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. Unlike many other games set in Middle-earth, Tales of the Shire doesn’t focus on epic quests. Instead, it lets players experience the peaceful life of a Hobbit, building friendships and becoming part of the Shire community.
Last year, I checked out The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria. It’s a co-op game where you play as one of four dwarves heading back into Khazad-dûm during the Fourth Age. I gave it a 5 out of 10 – I really liked the story, the world they built, and how the gameplay kept me coming back for more. But honestly, the fighting felt clunky, and the animations just weren’t that great.
