The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum has received a huge update.

Warner Bros. Pictures is planning to release ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ in US cinemas in 2027. Andy Serkis is directing the new ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie, and both Ian McKellen will return as Gandalf and Serkis himself will reprise his iconic role as Gollum. He previously played Gollum in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy and the first ‘Hobbit’ film.

What is the update on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum?

Kate Winslet is officially joining the cast of “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” according to Deadline. While details about her character are still secret, she’s expected to play the main female character. News of Winslet being in discussions for a role was first reported by Knight Edge Media.

According to reports, Andy Serkis and Peter Jackson spent much of last year convincing Kate Winslet to join the film. This required her and her family to relocate to New Zealand for filming, from late May to October. Winslet is already familiar with the country, having filmed Jackson’s 1994 film, Heavenly Creatures, there.

It’s funny to think about, but apparently Kate Winslet was actually first offered the role of Éowyn in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films! I read in Far Out Magazine that she ended up turning it down, and Miranda Otto ultimately played the part. It’s one of those ‘what if?’ moments for a fan like me, imagining her in that role.

According to Deadline, the new movie centers on Aragorn’s dangerous journey to find Gollum, preventing him from telling Sauron where the Ring is hidden. The story draws heavily from notes J.R.R. Tolkien originally included in his writings and takes place between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring.

The article notes that Elijah Wood is likely to return as Frodo Baggins in the upcoming film, The Hunt for Gollum, although this hasn’t been officially confirmed. While Wood has strongly suggested his involvement, he recently told The Times UK that there’s a strong possibility he’s in the movie, but he’s unable to make an official announcement until it’s made public.

Kate Winslet won an Academy Award for her role in The Reader (2008). She’s also been nominated for an Oscar several times, including for her work in Sense and Sensibility (1995), Titanic (1997), Iris (2001), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), Little Children (2006), and Steve Jobs (2015). Beyond her Oscar success, Winslet has won Emmy Awards for her performances in Mildred Pierce and Mare of Easttown. More recently, she returned to her role as Ronal in Avatar: Fire and Ash and directed her first feature film, Goodbye June, for Netflix.

The new film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, will be released on December 17, 2027. Filming is scheduled to start in May.
