Early in the year, a game called Code Violet quickly became a frontrunner for the worst-rated game of the year. Released on January 10th, it received an incredibly low score of 29 on Metacritic. Surprisingly, this is even lower than the already poorly received Lord of the Rings: Gollum. Player reviews on the PS5 are also very negative, averaging just 2.6 out of 10. Despite the widespread criticism, a sequel to Code Violet is officially in development.
Team Kill Media announced on February 10th, via X (formerly Twitter), that they’ve already begun development on Code UltraViolet, a direct sequel to Code Violet. They also expressed gratitude for fans’ “incredible support,” calling the original game an “overwhelming success” despite its negative reviews. It seems Code Violet sold surprisingly well and gained a dedicated following, even with the low scores.
Code Violet Is Getting a Sequel Despite Negative Reviews

It’s common for critics and players to have different opinions about games. For example, Tales of the Shire didn’t receive high scores from critics, but still found an audience. Usually, this shows up as a difference between scores from professional reviewers and player reviews. However, Code Violet, a PlayStation 5 exclusive, has a 2.88 out of 5-star rating on the platform, which is unusual. With over 4,000 reviews, the game has a very mixed reception: 31% of players gave it a perfect 5-star rating, while 36% rated it just one star. The rest of the ratings are fairly balanced in between.
The survival horror game isn’t winning over everyone. While some players have enjoyed it, many reviews mention problems like technical bugs, clunky controls, and repetitive enemies. A lot of people were hoping it would feel similar to classic games like Dino Crisis, but it doesn’t quite live up to those expectations. Despite the mixed reception, the game’s developer, TeamKill, is planning a sequel, likely due to decent sales numbers. Although Code Violet has a few glowing reviews, its success seems to be driven more by how well it sold than by positive critical feedback.
It’s difficult to know exactly why many people are giving the game 5-star reviews on the PS5, as many reviewers haven’t written detailed explanations. However, it seems some players believe Code Violet’s negative reputation isn’t entirely fair. One Reddit user described the game as “actually really fun,” highlighting its replay value and enjoyable gameplay. Plus, the announcement of a sequel from TeamKill received a lot of positive responses, indicating that Code Violet does have a dedicated fanbase looking forward to the next installment.
I had a blast playing through this game. I can’t wait for a sequel. Thanks, guys!

Despite the generally negative feedback, it appears Code Violet sold reasonably well, judging by the number of reviews on the PlayStation Store. It’s unclear if this translates to a large fanbase anticipating a sequel. While TeamKill hasn’t announced a release date for Code UltraViolet, they have confirmed that work on it has begun. It’s currently unknown if the new game will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive like the original.
