It’s been nearly six years since a major *Star Wars* movie hit theaters. After *The Rise of Skywalker* came out in late 2019, *Star Wars* shifted its focus to streaming shows on Disney+. The most popular of these has been *The Mandalorian*, which follows a bounty hunter (played by Pedro Pascal) and his companion, the lovable Grogu (often called Baby Yoda).
The popular Disney+ series *The Mandalorian* is getting a theatrical release with the new film, *The Mandalorian and Grogu*. The movie picks up where the series left off, following Mando and Grogu as they embark on another journey across the Star Wars galaxy. It will also feature new faces, including a character played by Sigourney Weaver called Colonel Ward.
Watch the first trailer for the film below:
As a huge fan, I loved the first poster Lucasfilm released! It instantly gave me a nostalgic vibe, reminding me of classic *Star Wars* and even *Indiana Jones* adventures. It really feels like they’re leaning into that old-school adventure feel, and I’m here for it!
There are a bunch of new Mandalorian and Grogu images as well:

As a huge fan of both Sigourney Weaver and *The Mandalorian*, I was thrilled to see a still featuring her character, Colonel Ward, alongside Grogu! Lucasfilm shared this photo, and it’s a fantastic little glimpse into what’s coming. It’s from their upcoming content, and of course, all rights are reserved by Lucasfilm Ltd. for 2025.

The Mandalorian and Grogu
As a huge fan of Star Wars, I was thrilled to get a look at a new photo featuring Din Djarin, the Mandalorian, and Grogu! Lucasfilm shared this image, and it’s a great sneak peek at what’s to come. It’s awesome to see these two together again, and Lucasfilm has all the rights, of course, so we know it’s the real deal! I can’t wait to see more!
Here is The Mandalorian and Grogu’s official synopsis:
With the defeat of the Empire, its former commanders are still causing trouble across the galaxy. The newly formed New Republic has teamed up with Din Djarin, a famous Mandalorian bounty hunter played by Pedro Pascal, and his young protégé, Grogu, to safeguard the freedom the Rebellion won. Jon Favreau directs this installment of *Star Wars*, titled “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” which also features Sigourney Weaver. Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Dave Filoni, and Ian Bryce produce the series, and Ludwig Göransson composed the music.
The new movie, *The Mandalorian and Grogu*, will be released in theaters on May 22, 2026. Another *Star Wars* film, *Star Wars: Starfighter*, is also being developed. This raises the question of whether *Star Wars* is shifting back to being primarily a theatrical experience, rather than a series for Disney+. Focusing on theatrical releases could potentially increase profits.
20 Actors You Forgot Were in Star Wars
Michael Biehn
Michael Biehn, a well-known actor in science fiction thanks to roles in films like *The Terminator* and *Aliens*, appeared in Season 2 of *The Mandalorian*. He played Lang, a tough mercenary who works for Morgan Elsbeth. Eventually, his character met his end at the hands of the Mandalorian – a common fate for guest stars on TV shows.
Jack Black (and Lizzo!)
As a huge *Star Wars* fan, I was completely surprised by the cameos in Season 3 of *The Mandalorian*! When Mando landed on Plazir-15, I couldn’t believe it was Jack Black and Lizzo running the place. Some might say it was a bit of a distraction, but honestly, they totally fit the vibe of quirky space royalty.
Rose Byrne
Before becoming famous in movies like *Insidious* and *Bridesmaids*, Rose Byrne had a small, uncredited role in *Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones*. She appeared as one of Senator Amidala’s attendants in an early scene, and doesn’t exactly look overjoyed about it!
Jodie Comer
Fans who watched the quick glimpse of Rey’s difficult childhood in *Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker* may have recognized Jodie Comer (from *Killing Eve*) as her mother. Rey’s father, Dathan, is connected to Emperor Palpatine, and Comer’s character, Miramir, married him despite his family’s evil legacy. It seems she has a knack for choosing questionable partners!
Jon Favreau
Jon Favreau is a prominent figure in the world of *Star Wars*. He created the hit series *The Mandalorian* and even provided the voice for the character Pre Vizsla. Before that, in the year leading up to *The Mandalorian’s* debut, he voiced another *Star Wars* character named Rio, a member of Tobias Beckett’s crew. Although Rio’s time was short-lived, Favreau’s success with *Star Wars* continues – he’s now writing and directing a movie featuring *The Mandalorian* and Grogu.
Sarah Michelle Gellar
Several well-known actors have also contributed to the animated side of *Star Wars*. Many fans who only watch the live-action films and series might be surprised to learn that Sarah Michelle Gellar, famous for playing Buffy, voiced the villain Seventh Sister in season two of *Star Wars Rebels*. She appeared in six episodes and delivered a really strong performance as the Inquisitor – it’s worth checking out some clips!
Keira Knightley
Just in case you’ve forgotten, the plot of *The Phantom Menace* relies on Queen Amidala using look-alikes to hide her identity. Throughout the movie, the Jedi and young Anakin interact with one of these doubles, believing her to be someone named Padmé, when in fact, Padmé *is* the Queen. (She wanted to connect with people on a personal level!) Meanwhile, another handmaiden pretends to *be* the Queen, and that role was played by a young Keira Knightley before she became famous in *Pirates of the Caribbean*. They really did look very similar at that age.
John Leguizamo
You wouldn’t be alone if you missed actor John Leguizamo in his appearance on *The Mandalorian*! His character, Gor Koresh, was quite a disguise – a green-skinned scoundrel with a combover, potbelly, and only one eye. He caused trouble for Mando over the beskar armor, making him hard to recognize.
Christopher Lloyd
Wow, that was Christopher Lloyd! He made a special appearance on *The Mandalorian* in Season 3, Episode 6, called “Guns For Hire.” He played Commissioner Helgait, the head of security on the planet Plazir-15, which was being run by Lizzo and Jack Black. Din Djarin and his team uncovered Helgait’s dishonest plan and saved the planet. It was a pretty eventful week on *The Mandalorian*, wasn’t it?
Tim Meadows
Season 3 of *The Mandalorian* really surprised viewers with some unexpected cameos! In the episode “The Pirate,” Tim Meadows, known from *Saturday Night Live*, showed up as Colonel Tuttle, a New Republic official who doesn’t quite believe X-wing pilot Carson Teva’s concerns about the Empire potentially rising again after *Return of the Jedi*. Honestly, the idea of Palpatine somehow coming back is just absurd! Isn’t it?
Lin-Manuel Miranda
Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of hits like *In the Heights* and *Hamilton*, started working with *Star Wars* by writing a song for the cantina scene in *The Force Awakens*. As a thank you, he got a small role in *The Rise of Skywalker*. You can see him briefly during the celebratory scene after the final battle, when Rose is hugging Chewbacca.
Simon Pegg
You might not know this, but the actor who played Unkar Plutt – the junk dealer in the Star Wars films who trades with Rey – is Simon Pegg, famous for movies like *Shaun of the Dead* and *Hot Fuzz*. Interestingly, Pegg actually suggested an extra scene where his character confronts Rey about the Millennium Falcon. They even filmed it, but it didn’t make the final cut. The scene involved Chewbacca stepping in and, dramatically, ripping off Unkar Plutt’s arm – a full quarter of his body!
Stephen Root
The show *The Book of Boba Fett* also featured some unexpected celebrity appearances. In the third episode, “The Streets of Mos Espa,” Boba Fett met a water seller named Lortha Peel, who needed help with a gang that was stealing from him. Instead of simply eliminating the gang, Boba gave them employment and then made Peel accountable for the high prices he was charging. The role of Peel was played by Stephen Root, a well-known actor from *NewsRadio* and films like *Dodgeball*, *O Brother, Where Art Thou?*, and *Office Space*. Perhaps if Peel had offered Boba Fett his red stapler, he might have been more inclined to help with the gangsters!
George Takei
George Takei is practically synonymous with *Star Trek*; he famously played Lieutenant (and later Captain) Sulu in numerous episodes and all six of the original *Star Trek* movies. While the *Star Trek* and *Star Wars* universes rarely overlap, Takei actually lent his voice to *Star Wars: The Clone Wars*, playing the alien general Lok Durd. It was a surprising appearance!
Sophie Thatcher
Remember the gangsters Stephen Root’s character wanted to eliminate in *The Book of Boba Fett*? One of those roles was played by Sophie Thatcher, who you might recognize from *Yellowjackets*, as well as the horror films *Heretic* and *Companion*. It would have been really cool to see her play a character like Black Krrsantan instead.
Justin Theroux
In *The Last Jedi*, the Resistance tries to enlist a codebreaker, played by Benicio del Toro, but initially focuses on a stylish man with a white suit and a streak of dark hair, portrayed by Justin Theroux of *The Leftovers*. Rose and Finn are arrested before they can convince him to join their side, and the character is never even given a name in the film. He’s only known as “Master Codebreaker” by fans online, and reports say Justin Theroux was cast in the role just one day before filming.
Danny Trejo
The latest episode of *The Book of Boba Fett* ends with Boba Fett winning a fight against two Hutt twins, who then give him a rancor as a peace offering. Veteran actor Danny Trejo, known for playing tough characters in films like *Heat*, *xXx*, and many Robert Rodriguez movies-including *Desperado*, *Grindhouse*, *Once Upon a Time in Mexico*, *Spy Kids*, and *Machete*-is the one who handles the rancor. And who directed this episode? None other than Robert Rodriguez himself.
Titus Welliver
Titus Welliver is an actor known for his roles in shows like *Lost* and *Sons of Anarchy*. He’s particularly famous for playing the lead in the *Bosch* and *Bosch: Legacy* detective series. More recently, he appeared in season three of *The Mandalorian* in the episode “The Heiress,” playing an Imperial Captain who works with Moff Gideon. (For fun, let’s call his character Captain B’Osch!)
Dominic West
Before Dominic West became famous as Detective Jimmy McNulty in *The Wire*, he had a small role in *Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace*. He appears as one of the palace guards in Queen Amidala’s palace. You can briefly see him at the beginning of the scene where Anakin tries to visit Padmé – he’s the guard who briefly stops Anakin at the door. That’s actually Dominic West!
