‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Scored Lowest of All Super Bowl Ads, Jon Favreau Hypes Cinematic Movie

Recently showed up at the Star Wars: Most Wanted event to generate excitement for the upcoming film. While promotional appearances aren’t unusual this close to the release date, the timing seems particularly important. Data from last weekend’s Super Bowl suggests the new Star Wars movie didn’t generate much positive buzz, with its ad ranking low in engagement compared to other commercials.

With “The Rise of Skywalker” behind it, a lot of expectation is on the new Star Wars show and its main character, Din Djarin. While the preview shown during the Super Bowl generated buzz, it didn’t seem to capture the public’s attention as much as other recent trailers, like those for Minions & Monsters or Steven Spielberg’s short film teaser, Disclosure Day.

A recent report by EDO ranked Super Bowl ads based on how much online interest they generated – things like website visits and Google searches. The Mandalorian and Grogu landed in the middle of the pack, at number 43. While that’s not a terrible showing, the performance of other ads puts it into perspective. For example, the trailer for Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie ranked 32nd, Peacock’s The Burbs series came in at 18th, and the Minions & Monsters ad nearly topped the chart at number 2. In fact, the new Minions sequel saw around 900% more engagement than The Mandalorian and Grogu.

What Jon Favreau Says About ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’

There are likely several reasons why The Mandalorian and Grogu didn’t perform as well as expected. While The Mandalorian and Grogu had a lot of pre-release publicity, Minions & Monsters benefited from both a title announcement and a first look at the film. However, director Jon Favreau isn’t concerned about the Super Bowl results, explaining at Star Wars: Most Wanted that The Mandalorian and Grogu is best experienced on the big screen. He stated:

As a movie lover, I think we really need to push the boundaries of what we’re doing in theaters. That means embracing those bigger, taller IMAX screens and designing sets that fill that space. It’s not just about visuals, though – everything needs to be better, especially the story. We want to create an experience that truly takes you away, something so immersive that you have to see it on the big screen. In a world where everyone is fighting for your attention, we want you to forget everything else, sit down, and lose yourself in the movie. No pausing, no grabbing snacks from the fridge – just a completely captivating experience that you’ll be eager to tell everyone about.

A full trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu hasn’t been released yet, and the footage shown so far hasn’t fully convinced viewers that it’s more than just another season of The Mandalorian. Hopefully, the next trailer will showcase the larger scope and scale that the creator, Dave Filoni, has suggested.
