The Mandalorian & Grogu Creator Drops a Thrilling Hint About the Empire’s New Leader

Although the Empire fell in Return of the Jedi, the galaxy wasn’t entirely safe. During the New Republic period, groups of Imperial soldiers continued to operate, trying to restore the old regime. Throughout The Mandalorian, Moff Gideon was the main villain, and while he appeared to be defeated in Season 3, many others like him were still out there, waiting for their chance. The upcoming film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, will see Din Djarin working with the New Republic to take down these Imperial leaders, hoping to prevent another war. Lucasfilm reportedly has significant plans for at least one of the targets Djarin is pursuing.

A new article in Empire magazine, focusing on The Mandalorian and Grogu, reveals more about the film’s villains. The Shadow Council, first introduced in Season 3 of The Mandalorian, will be a major threat. The group features a mysterious warlord played by Jonny Coyne, who also appeared in the series. Director Jon Favreau hinted that fans will enjoy the character’s name, but didn’t share any further details.

Who Could Jonny Coyne’s Imperial Warlord Be?

Favreau is deliberately keeping the identity of Coyne’s Imperial character a secret, suggesting it will be a significant reveal in the final movie. This likely means the character’s name is important to the broader Star Wars story. One idea is that the character will be named after someone from the older ‘Legends’ stories. Disney/Lucasfilm has already brought several Legends characters into the official Star Wars canon, like Grand Admiral Thrawn, and is hinting at a major conflict involving him. So, it wouldn’t be surprising if Favreau and the team introduced another Imperial warlord from Legends, possibly someone like Warlord Zsinj, with their own unique take.

The groundwork for the First Order was being laid by both the Shadow Council and what remained of the Empire, so it’s possible the character Coyne plays is the parent of someone who fought with the First Order in the sequel movies. Star Wars has shown villainous family connections before, like with Brendol Hux, the father of Armitage Hux. However, the sequels didn’t develop many First Order officers beyond Hux, which could make a family reveal, similar to what we’ve seen in The Mandalorian and Grogu, feel less impactful.

There’s a chance the character’s name, Coyne, is a hidden nod to someone involved in making Star Wars – perhaps a director like Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, or even George Lucas himself. However, the most likely explanations currently point to connections with either the old ‘Legends’ stories or the First Order. A link to the ‘Legends’ material would be especially enjoyable for dedicated fans who remember those stories, but it’s important that the reveal isn’t confusing for viewers who aren’t familiar with them. The creators need to handle this character’s name carefully to ensure everyone understands the reference.

The potential for a familiar name for Coyne’s warlord has sparked debate about whether Star Wars relies too heavily on its history. Some argue that in such a vast galaxy, making a new character related to someone we already know feels limiting. Others feel The Mandalorian has become overly reliant on pleasing existing fans after a strong, self-contained first season. While these concerns are understandable, it’s natural for any long-running series to include references to its past. As long as the reveal isn’t jarring, Coyne’s character name should be a fun nod to the franchise.
