The Mandalorian & Grogu Reveals New Image and Story Details About A Pivotal Star Wars Character’s Return

It’s been four years since a Star Wars movie was in theaters, with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker releasing in 2019. Now, Lucasfilm is bringing the story back to the big screen with Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau. The film continues the adventures of Din Djarin (The Mandalorian, played by Pedro Pascal) and Grogu, picking up after the events of Season 3 of the Disney+ series. It’s intended to be a large-scale cinematic follow-up to the popular show, and features exciting new cast member Jeremy Allen White (from The Bear) as a unique villain.

Empire Magazine recently shared a detailed look at Rotta the Hutt – a character voiced by White – who appears in The Mandalorian & Grogu. They also released a new image showing Rotta armed with blade-like weapons and prepared for a fight in an arena.

Compared to the large, slow-moving Hutts we’ve usually seen in Star Wars movies and shows, Rotta is much more muscular and physically fit. Trailers for The Mandalorian & Grogu reveal a huge arena battle where Rotta will fight Din Djarin, meaning audiences will finally see a Hutt warrior at the peak of their strength on the big screen.

Rotta the Hutt is Dividing Longtime Star Wars Fans (Again)

The new design of Rotta the Hutt in Mandalorian & Grogu is getting a varied reaction from Star Wars fans. Many are thrilled to see a Hutt warrior featured prominently in a major show, as the Star Wars Expanded Universe has long shown Hutts to be more than just slow-moving criminals. It often portrays them as a varied and complex species. By drawing on this richer history, Lucasfilm is breaking away from the limited way Hutts have been presented in the films.

However, some fans believe showing a Hutt as strong and physically fit goes against what makes these aliens scary in the movies. Traditionally, Hutts are threatening because of their power as crime lords and their ability to control people, not because of their strength or fighting skills. A muscular, warrior Hutt just doesn’t fit the image the films have created.

Director Jon Favreau acknowledges criticism about the character Rotta, explaining the deliberate choice to make him stand out. He asks, “If you’re trying to make a name for yourself as the child of Jabba the Hutt, how does that shape who you become?” Favreau finds it interesting to explore how Rotta’s lineage has influenced his path. Unlike his father, Rotta is a skilled fighter as well as a talker, and Favreau describes him as a powerful gladiator competing in underground fights.

Some fans were disappointed that the digital version of Rotta doesn’t look anything like actor Jeremy Allen White. It’s common practice to incorporate an actor’s features into their CGI character to make the performance more believable, and many feel this was a missed chance. However, Jeremy Allen White shared in an interview with Empire that fans will still recognize his voice in the role, including some Huttese language alongside standard Star Wars English. He also explained that his voice will change to fit the character, and he used Jabba the Hutt as inspiration.

The choice to give the character weapons with blades has become a running joke among fans. They’ve noted the amusing contrast between this and actor Jeremy White’s popular role in the show The Bear, where he’s known for skillfully—and frantically—chopping ingredients as a chef.

Rotta Is Bringing One of Star Wars’ Best Creators Full Circle

While some viewers have reacted strongly to his look, bringing Rotta the Hutt into The Mandalorian & Grogu is a significant connection between different parts of Star Wars history. Rotta first appeared as a baby, known as “Stinky,” in the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars. By now featuring an adult Rotta, creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are cleverly using their understanding of the animated series to enrich the current story.

The Mandalorian & Grogu is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 22nd.
