After a six-year break since 2019’s *The Rise of Skywalker*, Star Wars is returning to cinemas with *The Mandalorian and Grogu*. The film aims to recapture the excitement of the franchise, building on the popular TV series to re-establish Star Wars as a major movie powerhouse and pave the way for even more films in the future. It’s a chance to move beyond the somewhat controversial ending of the Skywalker Saga and reconnect with fans.
The initial trailer for *The Mandalorian and Grogu* effectively promotes the movie by staying true to the spirit of the original series. It feels like a larger-scale episode of the show, and if it can recreate the charm of its first two seasons, it will be a success. However, as part of a larger franchise, it connects to existing *Star Wars* stories. We see the return of Rotta the Hutt, Jabba’s son who first appeared in *Star Wars: The Clone Wars* film, and a quick glimpse of Garazeb Orrelios (Zeb) from *Star Wars Rebels*.
Why Zeb Appears In The Mandalorian & Grogu

I’m so excited to see Zeb make his way to a bigger *Star Wars* role! While Chopper briefly appeared in *Rogue One*, this feels like a much more important moment. Honestly, *Rebels* has already laid so much groundwork for *Ahsoka*, and we even got a quick glimpse of Zeb in *The Mandalorian* – it was great to see he’d joined the New Republic and was working with Carson Teva, training new recruits at that Adelphi base. That little scene really showed that even after the Empire fell, many within the New Republic understood the threat wasn’t completely gone.
As a fan, I’m so excited to see Zeb Orrelios in the new movie! It looks like they’re really giving him a bigger part to play, and the trailer shows him kicking some serious Stormtrooper butt with his awesome AB-75 bo-rifle – that weapon is so cool, especially knowing it’s from his Lasan Honor Guard days. We also see Mando and Grogu checking out what looks like an old Imperial base, and it definitely seems like Zeb is joining them on whatever mission they’re doing for the New Republic. Honestly, that makes perfect sense considering everything he went through in *Rebels*! We knew he’d be in the movie, but seeing him in action for the first time, and getting a little peek at his story, is just fantastic.
Zeb’s Mandalorian Movie Cameo Helps Set Up A Massive Star Wars Event

Seeing Zeb battle Stormtroopers is already exciting, but his story won’t stop there. He’s been confirmed to appear in Season 2 of *Ahsoka* (and was shown in early concept art at a recent event), which is currently being filmed and expected to release sometime in 2026, likely after the new *Mandalorian* movie. This could make Zeb an important link connecting the movie, *Ahsoka* Season 2, and the future of the *Star Wars* universe.
Season 1 of *Ahsoka* brought back the villain Grand Admiral Thrawn and set him on a path to reclaim power in the galaxy after being stranded in Peridea. It looks like a large-scale team-up is brewing to stop him, and this won’t be resolved in just the second season of *Ahsoka*. Dave Filoni is planning a movie that will bring the storylines from *Ahsoka*, *Rebels*, and *The Mandalorian* together. We can expect to see characters like Ahsoka, those from *Rebels*, Din Djarin, and New Republic pilots like Carson Teva all working together in this event.
Since Ahsoka and Zeb are the only ones who know Din Djarin (Mando), they’re in the best position to ask for his help with this new mission and warn him about the danger posed by Thrawn. We might even see hints of this in the next *The Mandalorian and Grogu* season. Although the initial previews suggest a more self-contained story, it could expand on the remnants of the Empire and even mention Thrawn, creating stronger connections within the *Star Wars* universe without disrupting the main plot. It’s unclear how much Zeb will be in the movie, but this approach is clearly setting up a much larger crossover event.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released on May 22nd, 2026.
