Despite the upcoming Star Wars movie, a fourth season of The Mandalorian is still a possibility. Jon Favreau began writing the scripts for Season 4 in May 2022 and completed them by February 2023. Many initially believed the new movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, was based on those scripts. However, it now appears that might not be true.
In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Jon Favreau, director of The Mandalorian and Grogu, revealed some unexpected news about Season 4. He confirmed that a fourth season was fully planned and written. He even has the complete script ready. Favreau explained that The Mandalorian and Grogu is designed more like a movie than a typical weekly TV series, with a bigger, overarching storyline.
What Does This Mean For The Mandalorian Season 4?
Even though the storylines might be different, a fourth season of The Mandalorian still seems doubtful following the completion of The Mandalorian and Grogu. Reports surfaced in early 2023 that Disney asked Lucasfilm to prioritize making movies. It’s noteworthy that only one live-action Star Wars Disney+ series is currently planned, while The Mandalorian and Grogu has finished filming and Shawn Levy’s Starfighter movie is now in production. Lucasfilm is clearly concentrating on theatrical releases, and the expectation is that Din Djarin and Grogu’s story will continue on the big screen.
The real test of success will come when The Mandalorian and Grogu is released in theaters on May 22, 2026. Lucasfilm is hoping the movie’s popularity, driven by the beloved character Grogu (often called “Baby Yoda”), will attract families even if they don’t have a Disney+ subscription. As Jon Favreau explained in an interview with Empire, the film is designed to be easy for anyone to enjoy. While the story will connect to the events of Ahsoka Season 2, Empire points out that you don’t need to know the show to understand and enjoy the movie. If this film does well, it could lead to more Mandalorian movies in the future.
It’s good to see Lucasfilm created a movie from an original idea, rather than simply expanding a TV show. They recently did the opposite with three Disney+ series – The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Skeleton Crew – and the results were mixed. Movies and TV shows require different approaches, and a story that works well in one format doesn’t always translate to the other. It’s exciting to imagine Din Djarin and Grogu continuing their story on both the big and small screen, though that still seems like a long shot.
