Star Wars is returning in full force in 2026 with two exciting projects: the Disney+ series Maul – Shadow Lord and the new film, The Mandalorian and Grogu. This marks the first time since 2019 that fans will be able to enjoy new Star Wars content in both theaters and on streaming, so it’s not surprising that these projects are connected.
Like most Star Wars releases, The Mandalorian and Grogu is accompanied by extra content designed to deepen fans’ understanding of the show’s universe. This includes details about characters, planets, vehicles, and all the iconic weapons and technology. Recently, these supplemental materials have confirmed a long-held fan theory about a key supporting character and their surprising connection to Darth Maul.
The Armorer Wears Maul’s Uniform

Din Djarin, the main character of The Mandalorian, was raised by a small, strict group within Mandalorian society called “The Tribe.” They follow very traditional rules, such as never taking off their helmets in front of others. Leading The Tribe during the time of the New Republic was The Armorer, a female Mandalorian whose face remains hidden, but whose helmet is instantly recognizable.
From the moment The Armorer appeared in Season 1 of The Mandalorian, many dedicated Star Wars fans believed her unique helmet wasn’t just a random choice. That theory has now been proven correct by Star Wars: The Mandalorian Visual Guide, a new book offering a behind-the-scenes look at the show as it expands to the big screen.
The Armorer’s helmet features fake horns, a subtle nod to Mandalore’s history. This is a reference to the time when Maul was in power, as seen in the animated series Clone Wars. That series shows how Maul survived his fight with Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace and built a criminal organization called the Shadow Collective, with help from his brother, Savage Opress, and others.
Darth Maul, along with his Nightbrother warriors from Dathomir, took control of criminal organizations like the Pykes, Hutts, and Black Sun. He then allied with the Death Watch, a radical Mandalorian group, and established a stronghold on the planet Mandalore. Maul ruled Mandalore throughout the Clone Wars until a combined force of Ahsoka Tano, Bo-Katan Kryze and her Night Owls, and Republic clone troopers freed the planet in a crucial battle. Though the Empire later bombed Mandalore, scattering its people, Maul and the Death Watch left a lasting impact on Mandalorian society and its traditions.
Big Clue About The Armorer’s Identity?

The story of Darth Maul continues in the animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. The series follows Maul after his capture on Mandalore and escape from the events of Order 66, as he goes into hiding. He’s now seeking revenge on former allies from the Shadow Collective who abandoned him, and he’s assembled a team of Mandalorians to help, including Rook Kast (voiced by Vanessa Marshall), who used to lead his elite commando unit.
A popular fan theory suggests that Rook Kast, after the death of Darth Maul during the time of the Empire, abandons her life as his follower and returns to the strict traditions of her people, ultimately becoming The Armorer. While it’s a compelling idea, there’s currently no proof to support it. The upcoming comic series, Maul – Shadow Lord, might shed some light on this possibility.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m so excited that I can watch The Mandalorian and Maul – Shadow Lord whenever I want on Disney+. And get this – The Mandalorian & Grogu are hitting theaters on May 22nd!
