The Marlow Murder Club’s Samantha Bond teases Judith’s “cautiously” developing romance

The main focus of The Marlow Murder Club is the mysteries the three main characters solve, but the first two seasons have also shown us more about their lives outside of the investigations.

At the end of season two, Samantha Bond’s character, Judith, was introduced to Professor Darius Gifford, played by Hugh Quarshie, and it seemed like they had an instant connection.

With Quarshie back for season 3, Bond revealed to TopMob that their romantic storyline will be progressing, but at a gradual and careful pace.

According to Bond, Judith hadn’t experienced romance in a long time, making her hesitant. Despite this, she does agree to let him assist her, and he cleverly investigates things independently.

This season, Cara Horgan’s character, Becks, will face a deeply personal challenge: she becomes a suspect in a murder investigation after a death occurs at her college reunion.

Jo Martin, who plays Suzie, explained that neither her character nor Judith ever doubted Becks’ innocence.

We’re determined to keep going, and that motivates us to work even harder to prove our friend didn’t do it, we hope. But the way things are going, it feels like people are already convinced she’s incapable of such a thing.

There’s a moment where they take away her ID badge – and for us, those badges represent our access and position. Suddenly, we’re told we’re not allowed to communicate with her, which is terrible. But whether we obey that order is a key part of the story, and it creates a compelling internal conflict.

Initially, we all strongly disagree and think something won’t happen. But then, every now and then, something surprising occurs, and we’re shocked – like, ‘Could she really do that?’ – especially when it involves someone like Beckham, because it seems impossible. These situations definitely challenge our friendship, but ultimately, they make us closer.

The Marlow Murder Club is coming to U&Drama on Wednesday 18 March 2026.
