The Marvels director Nia DaCosta talks The Marvels’ box office and reviews

While promoting her new movie, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Nia DaCosta spoke with Deadline about the disappointing box office results of The Marvels. She explained that everyone involved in making the film – the cast and crew – worked incredibly hard on it.

She added that everyone involved was dedicated to creating a fantastic movie, and she expressed gratitude for the strong relationships she built with the team.

The director of Little Woods shared that she visited the set of Avengers: Doomsday last summer. She enjoyed reconnecting with producers and friends, and also had the chance to meet the Russo brothers. Despite the film’s disappointing box office performance and reviews, she felt good knowing everyone involved had strong relationships. Looking back, she believes everyone gave it their all and acted with good intentions, and she accepts the outcome as it is.

Director Nia DaCosta has hinted that Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel), and Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau) might appear in the upcoming film, based on comments she made about friends being involved. However, Marvel Studios hasn’t officially confirmed their roles yet.

I was a little disappointed to hear that The Marvels only made about $206.1 million in theaters, especially considering it cost around $374 million to make. It seems like the movie didn’t quite earn back its production costs.

You can now watch The Marvels on Disney+. The movie features Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, Teyonah Parris, and a supporting cast including Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, and Samuel L. Jackson.
