The Marvel Cinematic Universe recently explained the fate of a character who hasn’t been seen in seven years. The MCU often introduces compelling characters and then leaves them sidelined for extended periods. While characters like Shang-Chi, Kate Bishop, and Kamala Khan are long overdue for a return, the reintroduction of characters from the old Netflix Marvel shows opens the door for even more forgotten heroes to reappear.
Though not a central figure, Sister Maggie, the mother of Daredevil, hasn’t been seen since the show returned. The second episode of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 finally reveals what happened to her.
What Happened to Sister Maggie in Daredevil: Born Again?

Since Daredevil’s return on Disney+, fans have been wondering what happened to Sister Maggie. She’s the same character from the Marvel comics, but portrayed as a younger woman. Sister Maggie is actually Margaret Murdock, Matt Murdock’s mother and the ex-wife of Jack Murdock. In the comics, she and Jack had twins, but Margaret struggled with postpartum depression. Believing she wasn’t a good mother, she left after experiencing delusions and attacking baby Matt, and never came back.
She joined a convent and started working at a local Catholic church. Years later, in the ‘Born Again’ comic book arc, Matt Murdock discovered she was actually his mother. This church also became a significant location in the comics, tragically becoming the site of Karen Page’s murder by Bullseye—a deeply traumatic event for Matt. This history makes Maggie’s appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe particularly intriguing.
Joanne Whalley played Maggie Grace, appearing first in the premiere of Daredevil Season 3. The show revealed she was Matt Murdock’s mother. However, her backstory differed from the comics; she didn’t leave due to postpartum depression, but because she became pregnant before taking her vows as a nun, leading her to believe she had broken her commitment to God. Father Lantom helped her leave and she remained separated from her son ever since. This also altered Karen Page’s storyline, as Father Lantom intervened and took a bullet meant for her from Bullseye.
In the second episode of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Bullseye returned to a church where a priest offered assistance. Bullseye then inquired about Sister Maggie, learning she was currently on leave in Rome. This could be a positive development, as Bullseye appears to be changing his ways – he recently saved Daredevil and now seems focused on taking down Kingpin. Despite this potential shift, his unstable mental state means anyone could be in danger, making it wise to keep Maggie safe by having her away from the city.
