The MCU Has Officially Introduced Two Members of the Last Avengers Team I Ever Expected To See

For almost ninety years, Marvel Comics has carefully built a vast and complex world filled with countless heroes and villains. While characters like Spider-Man, the Hulk, and Captain America are world-famous, the comics also feature many lesser-known figures who haven’t become popular outside of the books. These characters often served as background details or humorous additions in the original comics, appearing in minor stories or on the sidelines of big events. However, the massive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has changed things, giving even these obscure characters a chance to shine on screen. By using these minor figures to add depth to its universe, Marvel Studios has shown that even the most forgotten comic book characters can become important parts of the overall story.

The Avengers in Marvel comics aren’t one fixed team, but a changing group of hero teams united by a shared set of beliefs. Over the years, different groups have used the Avengers name, like the Secret Avengers, West Coast Avengers, and New Avengers. This flexible structure lets heroes work with different levels of government control, responding to the unique challenges of various regions or communities. While the Thunderbolts comic successfully launched a new Avengers team, and there’s talk of a new, younger group of heroes forming, the most surprising recent development in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the introduction of several members of the Great Lakes Avengers.

Who Are the Great Lake Avengers in Marvel Comics?

The Great Lakes Avengers first appeared in 1989 in West Coast Avengers #46, created by John Byrne. The team was originally intended as a humorous take on the increasing number of superhero groups. It was started by Craig Hollis, a mutant who could come back to life, and who called himself Mr. Immortal. Hollis put an ad in a Milwaukee newspaper looking for other powered people who weren’t getting attention from the bigger, more famous teams on the coasts. This led to a unique group of heroes, including Big Bertha, a supermodel, Flatman, who was two-dimensional, Dinah Soar, who could scream very loudly, and Doorman, who could teleport. Even though they didn’t have much money or recognition, they genuinely wanted to protect the American Midwest from dangers that the New York Avengers often missed.

The Great Lakes Avengers gained real credibility when Hawkeye (Clint Barton) and Mockingbird (Bobbi Morse) noticed them. Hawkeye and Mockingbird were looking for a change after dealing with a lot of red tape as part of the West Coast Avengers. At first, they were upset the Great Lakes Avengers were using the Avengers name without permission. But they quickly realized this Milwaukee-based team had a lot of potential and were genuinely dedicated to helping people. Hawkeye and Mockingbird decided to mentor the group, teaching them the skills and strategy needed to face dangerous threats. Over time, heroes like Squirrel Girl and even unpredictable characters like Deadpool joined the team, fitting right in with their often-crazy adventures.

The MCU Already Has Five Heroes Connected to the Great Lake Avengers

It’s been really interesting seeing the Great Lakes Avengers slowly come to life in the MCU! We’ve already met three official members, but they’re definitely different from how they are in the comics. First, there was Mr. Immortal in She-Hulk. This version of Craig Hollis isn’t the noble leader we know from the books – he’s kind of a mess who uses his ability to come back to life to avoid responsibility in his personal life. Then, with Wonder Man, we got Doorman, and his story is really grounded too. He’s not a superhero from the start; he’s just a guy working behind the scenes in Hollywood who accidentally gets powers from some chemical waste. It’s a cool, more realistic take on the team.

Okay, let’s talk about where Marvel seems to be heading. The biggest news for me is seeing Deadpool – Ryan Reynolds, naturally – officially jump into the main MCU timeline with Deadpool & Wolverine. That’s huge! But it’s not just him. Marvel’s been subtly laying groundwork for a potential team-up, specifically by keeping characters connected to the Great Lakes Avengers alive and kicking. We’ve still got Clint Barton postHawkeye, and they’ve already explored the Mockingbird story through both Agents of SHIELD* and the films. Now, I don’t expect to see the full Great Lakes Avengers team anytime soon, but it’s definitely interesting to see Marvel planting these seeds. It makes you wonder what they’re planning.
