The MCU Is About To Have an Unwanted Box Office Record for the First Time in 14 Years

Initially, in 2008, Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios conceived an ambitious plan: to develop a cinematographic universe interwoven with tales similar to those found within Marvel Comics. At that time, Iron Man was not yet widely recognized, and Robert Downey Jr., due to his past actions, was still perceived as a risk in the Hollywood industry. However, when the film turned out to be both critically acclaimed and commercially successful, it took everyone by surprise. Given that big-name characters were scattered among various studios, Marvel’s accomplishment of creating the Marvel Cinematic Universe with lesser-known heroes was unprecedented. The public’s positive response to this venture was evident.

In the ensuing years, after the acclaimed release of Iron Man, Marvel expanded their cinematic universe by producing movies centered around the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, and Thor. As The Avengers was about to debut, these characters who were once considered secondary stars transformed into Marvel Studios’ blockbuster sensations. It seemed that every film following The Avengers was destined for box office triumph. Each subsequent installment consistently outdid its predecessor, with records at the global box office being shattered and films frequently earning over $1 billion worldwide.

Typically, Marvel Studios managed to place at least one movie among the top 10 global box office earners each year. However, with the arrival of COVID-19, this pattern seemed to be disrupted for Marvel Studios. Previously, the Marvel Cinematic Universe served as a model for other studios when it came to superhero narratives. Until the pandemic, Marvel Studios maintained its box office supremacy with each new addition to its expansive film universe. But once the studio’s releases slowed due to the pandemic, things shifted, and by the time production resumed, Marvel Studios found itself in a situation where it was releasing too much content in a short span of time. As a result, viewers grew tired of needing to follow TV shows to comprehend the films.

The Current State of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Let’s jump to the present. This year, Marvel Studios has unveiled three movies: “Captain America: Brave New World”, “Thunderbolts”, and “Fantastic Four: The First Steps”. While “Brave New World” garnered mixed reviews from critics and audiences, both “Thunderbolts” and “Fantastic Four” were generally well-received. Critics hailed these films as some of the best productions by the studio in recent times. Regrettably, none of the films fared exceptionally well at the box office. “Captain America: Brave New World” grossed $415 million worldwide, while “Thunderbolts” earned only $382.4 million globally. Despite these modest figures, it was anticipated that “Fantastic Four” would surpass their performances. Interestingly, “Fantastic Four” is outperforming the other films, as it currently stands at $491 million worldwide. However, this year will be the first time since 2011 that a Marvel Cinematic Universe film won’t make it to the top 10 on the global box office charts.

At the moment, “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Fantastic Four: The First Steps” are holding the 9th and 10th spots. However, these positions could soon change as forthcoming films such as “Wicked: For Good” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash” are scheduled to hit theaters later this year. This may signal a shift in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s long-standing dominance at the box office, which has been a mainstay for nearly two decades. Despite its ongoing popularity, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not seeing the same box office success it once did. But don’t despair, as there are still many reasons to look forward to what Marvel Studios is planning next, particularly the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday”.

Following the end of the Infinity Saga, it’s clear that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has experienced some changes in its position as the benchmark for movie universes. Previously, it was unrivaled with its box office success. However, now that its reign has waned, it’s no longer the only standout comic book franchise on the big screen. Despite a recent dip in box office performance, there’s optimism that Marvel Studios will learn from their mistakes and focus more on quality rather than quantity. This could potentially help them reclaim their dominant position in the future. The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains promising despite its recent box office setbacks.

Currently, Marvel Studios’ “Fantastic Four: The First Journey” is showing in cinemas, and both “Captain America: New World Order” and “Thunderbolts*” are available for streaming on Disney+ at the moment.
