Since Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen a lot of shifts and new developments. While Tony Stark’s death marked the end of an era, it also opened the door for new stories. Many fans particularly miss the close relationship between Tony Stark and Bruce Banner.
Since Tony Stark’s passing, fans haven’t seen a strong partnership like the one he had with Spider-Man. However, the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day suggests that’s about to change. With Peter Parker turning to Bruce Banner for assistance, the two are forming a bond and a new scientific collaboration that could become the next great duo, filling the void left by Tony Stark.
Tony Stark and Bruce Banner Defined the Early MCU
The Marvel Cinematic Universe began with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, both released in the same year, starring Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. Although they didn’t team up on screen until The Avengers in 2012, their connection felt natural. The two quickly bonded over their shared passion for science, becoming a fan-favorite duo. It was refreshing to see two characters who were intellectual equals, especially since most of the other heroes were either trained fighters, secret agents, or had god-like powers.
After that moment, the connection between those two characters became one of the most important friendships in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers: Age of Ultron showed viewers how much the Avengers had grown since their first adventure. The team was collaborating to create technology that could calm the Hulk if he lost control, and they were also upgrading their weapons and costumes to prepare for future battles.
Outside of being the Hulk, Banner served as a trusted friend to Tony Stark, listening as Stark recounted the events of Iron Man 3. Even though Banner was mostly asleep during that time, it still meant a lot. After they grew apart following Age of Ultron, it was good to see them reconnect briefly in Avengers: Infinity War.
Throughout the epic story of the Infinity Saga, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner developed a remarkably close friendship, making Stark’s death particularly heartbreaking because he didn’t have a chance to properly say goodbye. Since then, no other pairing of characters has generated the same level of enthusiasm among Marvel fans. However, just because fans haven’t latched onto another duo doesn’t mean new and meaningful connections can’t develop.
Bruce Banner Will Now Aid Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day
To figure out why Bruce Banner would hang out with Peter Parker during the Brand New Day storyline, it helps to see how the Spider-Man movies have made Peter’s place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe make sense. Spider-Man: Homecoming showed Tony Stark loosely mentoring Peter, giving him an advanced, high-tech suit and guiding him to use his powers responsibly.
As a huge Spider-Man fan, I always appreciated how Far From Home brought in a Skrull posing as Nick Fury, and No Way Home paired Peter with Doctor Strange. Those characters really helped Peter evolve and were essential to the story. But with Bruce Banner joining the mix, it feels different. It doesn’t seem like he’ll be stepping into a mentor role in the same way, and honestly, I think that’s a refreshing change of pace. It’ll be interesting to see how their dynamic plays out without that typical guidance dynamic.
The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day shows Peter Parker seeking help from Bruce Banner. Peter believes Banner, with his knowledge of biology and gamma radiation, is his only hope. As they work together, their intelligence could lead to a strong connection, particularly because Peter will eventually need Banner’s help to deal with the Hulk.
As a movie fan, what really grabs me about this new connection is that it doesn’t feel like the typical mentor-student dynamic we’ve seen with Peter before. Honestly, it’s heartwarming to see Banner, who’s always battled feeling alone, finally meet someone who gets him. I’m really hoping this develops into something meaningful and gives Peter a character who can truly understand and validate him – he deserves that, you know?
Bruce and Peter’s Friendship Could Be the Next Great MCU Duo
The unique dynamic between the science-focused characters in the early Marvel Cinematic Universe is something we won’t see again, and that’s okay. Just because it’s unlikely to be replicated doesn’t mean it’s a negative development.
Bruce Banner and Peter Parker don’t seem like they’d be friends outside of superhero work, but Peter often needs someone to talk to when things get tough. The old cartoon series showed him relying on Dr. Curt Connors, and now the movies can explore a similar dynamic with Bruce Banner – perhaps just for one film.
Bruce Banner has always been a solitary person, and he really needs a reliable friend – someone he can connect with even if they can’t see each other often. Peter Parker would be a great fit, naturally following the strong connection Banner had with Tony Stark. Interestingly, even the Hulk seems to make friends more easily than Bruce does. It would be wonderful to see both the Hulk and Spider-Man become friends, and to watch Bruce and Peter develop a close relationship over the course of a movie.
Science has always been important in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and fans have missed seeing the dynamic between scientists. While no one can truly replace Tony Stark, Peter Parker is stepping up as a worthy successor. It’s great to see Peter balancing college life with a connection to a former Avenger, Bruce Banner, who doesn’t recognize him. This setup could also open the door for Banner to reappear in future movies, potentially as a professor.
