The MCU Is Officially Trying to Fix Its Most Disappointing Marvel Team-Up Event

It’s widely accepted that the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t been as strong since the release of Avengers: Endgame. While much of the discussion centers on its recent struggles, the MCU had issues even before The Infinity Saga finished. Now, the franchise is developing a long-term plan to address one particularly disappointing team-up, and surprisingly, give it a second chance to succeed.

I’m really hoping Marvel gets it right this time! They’re giving another one of my favorite teams a chance to become a huge success, and I’m on the edge of my seat to see if it finally clicks. Will this be the breakthrough they need, or will they fall short again? It’s nerve-wracking, but I’m staying optimistic!

The Netflix Defenders Didn’t Get It Right

Marvel and Netflix teamed up in the mid-2010s to create a shared universe of superhero shows, starting with the highly praised first season of Daredevil. Jessica Jones followed with another strong debut, boosted by David Tennant’s performance as the villain Killgrave. For a while, it seemed like these shows would be just as successful as the Marvel movies. However, things started to go downhill after Jessica Jones Season 1. While Daredevil and Jessica Jones weren’t as strong in their second seasons, Luke Cage and Iron Fist had difficult starts. By 2017, even with a new show for the Punisher and second seasons for Luke Cage and Iron Fist, the Marvel-Netflix shows were struggling. The Defenders miniseries was intended to revive interest, but it wasn’t able to turn things around.

Overall, The Defenders was a letdown. While not terrible, it didn’t meet the expectations fans had after following Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones through multiple seasons of their individual shows. The cast already had a strong foundation and some members had even shared scenes before, so the team-up should have felt natural and effortless, but it didn’t quite come together.

Rather than building the show around how the heroes interacted, The Defenders sprinkled in scenes with different character pairings as little surprises. The complex backstory of Daredevil, involving the Hand ninja clan and Elektra’s fate, overshadowed the other characters and their stories. This storyline wasn’t very popular during Daredevil Season 2, and even with a talented actress like Sigourney Weaver as the Hand’s leader, the central conflict in The Defenders felt underwhelming.

The Defenders Are Coming (Back) to the MCU (How to do it Right)

The heroes from the old Defenders series are officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Charlie Cox has already reprised his role as Daredevil with the new Daredevil: Born Again series on Disney+, and season two is currently available to watch. Soon, Krysten Ritter will appear as Jessica Jones in a guest role. Production is underway on season three of Daredevil: Born Again, and it’s been confirmed that Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Iron Fist (Finn Jones), and Jessica Jones will all be returning alongside Daredevil.

The Defenders are coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s important to get it right this time. The first Defenders series got bogged down in the complex backstory of Daredevil, instead of letting the team and their relationships take center stage. It also shifted the focus from realistic, street-level crime to a more fantastical story about ninjas and the supernatural. Daredevil: Born Again has successfully shown Daredevil as a grounded, street-level hero, so the next iteration of The Defenders should do the same. Fans have always wanted to see this team tackle relatable, local problems, and with Kingpin in control of New York City, there’s certainly no shortage of those.

The old Marvel-Netflix shows never really finished their storylines. While Daredevil did get a conclusion, the others were left hanging. Jessica Jones had to imprison her superpowered friend, Trish Walker, Luke Cage became Harlem’s crime boss, and Danny Rand went searching for a previous Iron Fist, leaving Colleen Wing to protect New York City. These plots were never resolved when the shows ended, and now Daredevil: Born Again is adding even more twists – like the reveal that Jessica Jones has a daughter.

To successfully bring The Defenders into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios needs to focus the team on smaller, street-level crimes and finally wrap up loose ends from the old Netflix series. Plus, including The Punisher would be a great addition and improve the team dynamic.

You can now watch Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+, along with the other Marvel shows that originally aired on Netflix. Join the conversation and share your thoughts on the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe news in the ComicBook Forum!
