The MCU Just Beat Christopher Nolan To Telling The Story of His Next Oscar-Contender Film

Christopher Nolan played a significant role in the annals of comic book filmmaking. Following Tim Burton’s departure from the Batman series, Warner Bros. tapped Joel Schumacher to maintain its momentum. However, Schumacher’s films were considered too flamboyant, leading Warner Bros. to reconsider their approach to DC Comics’ most iconic character. In 2005, Nolan was approached to direct Batman in the movie “Batman Begins,” which achieved enough success to warrant a follow-up. The release of “The Dark Knight” revolutionized superhero films due to its intricate plot and unforgettable antagonist. Nolan concluded his trilogy with “The Dark Knight Rises” before choosing to distance himself from the genre that cemented his fame.

Lately, Nolan has been focusing on real-life tales, such as Dunkirk and Oppenheimer. Yet, he hasn’t given up on fantasy entirely, since his upcoming movie, The Odyssey, will adapt the classic Greek poem for the silver screen. However, Marvel’s rival, DC Universe, doesn’t want Nolan to tell this tale without integrating it into their franchise initially.

Eyes of Wakanda Sets the Stage for the Events of The Odyssey

Marvel Studios’ current production, titled Eyes of Wakanda, stands out due to its timeline diversity within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Each installment focuses on at least one War Dog from Wakanda, who are on a mission to recover vibranium stolen from their homeland. In episode 2, “Legends and Lies,” B’kai, also known as Memnon, infiltrates the Greek army to retrieve a vibranium amulet belonging to Helen of Troy. Outside Troy’s gates, Odysseus faces a stalemate, and his only viable strategy is to sneak a large horse filled with soldiers past the city gates since the Trojans won’t be able to resist it. Despite Memnon and his comrade Achilles grappling with this concept, they decide to proceed with it nonetheless.

Following the Trojans’ celebrations with the horse, the Greeks covertly depart and head towards the palace. They face no issues until a solitary soldier manages to sound an alarm, signaling his fellow warriors. As Achilles observes, his companion Memnon withdraws from the battlefield amidst a scuffle with several soldiers. Once free, Achilles encounters Memnon and they engage in a fierce battle over a talisman. In order to safeguard Wakanda’s mysteries, Memnon slays Achilles and departs. The Greeks’ expedition does not cease there, as Nolan will describe Odysseus’ subsequent fate after the Trojan War in The Odyssey.

The Odyssey Will Have Its Own Marvel Connections

It seems Marvel Studios could be acknowledging Christopher Nolan, as some of its most prominent actors from the MCU now appear in his upcoming project, “The Odyssey.” Previously, Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Jon Bernthal, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron graced Marvel Studios productions before joining the cast. Moreover, Nolan appears to be expressing gratitude for Wakanda by casting Lupita Nyong’o in a role rumored to portray Helen of Troy. If this is true, “Eyes of Wakanda” would serve as an excellent prelude to “The Odyssey,” allowing Nolan to revisit his comic book origins effortlessly.

Eyes of Wakanda is streaming on Disney+.
