The MCU Just Insulted Captain America Again

Marvel’s new show, Wonder Man, recently added to the challenges faced by Sam Wilson’s Captain America. Sam has consistently struggled to gain full acceptance since taking over from Steve Rogers. Even President Ross voiced the common sentiment when he bluntly told Sam he wasn’t Steve Rogers.

Sam Wilson, the current Captain America, seems to be feeling overlooked within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film Captain America: Brave New World didn’t perform as well at the box office as hoped, earning only $415.1 million worldwide. Since then, marketing for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday has focused heavily on the return of Steve Rogers, making Sam feel even more sidelined. Now, the new TV series Wonder Man has added to this feeling, with a recent development that feels like another snub.

Wonder Man is no Fan of Captain America

I have to tell you, there’s this quick moment in Wonder Man episode 3 that really got my attention. Simon Williams is chatting with his cousin at his mom’s birthday, and they’re talking about superheroes. His cousin brings up Captain America and calls him ‘the full package,’ but Simon immediately pushes back, saying he’s just a dude who throws a shield. It became super clear he wasn’t talking about the original Cap, but Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, and honestly? He doesn’t seem to be impressed at all!

The difference between Sam Wilson and Simon Williams runs deeper than it seems. While both exist in a world filled with gods, monsters, and super-powered individuals, their perspectives are vastly different. Sam is a regular person who bravely steps into this extraordinary world and will eventually even lead his own Avengers team. Simon, however, is super-powered, but wishes he wasn’t, as his abilities jeopardize the career he’s always wanted.

What makes Wonder Man stand out is its focus on character development, something you don’t often see in Marvel shows. Even seemingly small interactions, like Simon’s jab about Captain America, carry significant weight. The series reveals that Sam Wilson becoming Captain America has unexpectedly triggered feelings of resentment in Simon. Hopefully, with the show being well-received, we’ll eventually see how Sam and Simon will interact when their paths finally cross.

The real question is whether Simon and Sam Wilson were ever allies. The last issue of Wonder Man showed Simon freeing Trevor Slattery, a supposed terrorist, from a high-security prison. This puts them on opposite sides of the law – one an Avenger, the other a criminal. It makes you wonder if their first encounter will be a classic superhero brawl, as these team-ups often start.

Wonder Man is now streaming on Disney+.
