In essence, the comic book series Ironheart initially seems like a quiet story. Riri Williams, having spent years away, returns to her hometown, Chicago, where she encounters a group utilizing some form of light sorcery. There’s no imminent threat on par with the Avengers at this point, making it seem that Ironheart’s return should be straightforward after her heroic actions in helping Wakanda prevent Namor from causing massive casualties. However, things take a turn for the complex when Riri decides to collaborate with The Hood, accepting payment for his jobs to enhance her suit. The tasks aren’t as straightforward as they appear, and Riri must navigate through several challenging decisions to free herself from this precarious situation.
As the climax of “Ironheart” approaches and Riri prepares to confront The Hood, several influential figures have entered the scene. Among them is Obadiah Stane’s son, Zeke, who enhances himself with cybernetics, and Mephisto, a formidable magic user in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However intense the opposition may be, Riri faces her challenges alone during the pivotal battle of her solo series. This solitary stand leaves at least two significant groups appearing rather unwise.
Wakanda Should Always Have Riri’s Back
Natasha, Riri’s AI ally, Natalie, proposes the idea of reaching out to Shuri about the current situation in Chicago. However, Riri declines, fearing it might give an impression that she needs assistance. In truth, it should be the opposite as the events following the vibranium-tracking machine episode have highlighted her significant role and necessitate protection. It’s somewhat unexpected that Shuri doesn’t have the Dora Milaje safeguarding her, given their vigilance over individuals tied to Wakanda like Helmut Zemo and Ulysses Klaue.
Perhaps the Dora Milaje could have prevented The Hood and his allies from retaliating against Riri, much earlier than they did. Despite the numerous pressing issues that Wakanda was grappling with, it seems the leadership fell short of their responsibilities, mirroring a powerful organization in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Masters of the Mystic Arts Leave Riri & Her Friends Fighting an Uphill Battle
Following Riri’s doubts about The Hood’s powers, she seeks assistance from Zelma Stanton and her mom who run a magic shop. Given their background in sorcery, with Zelma’s mother having spent time at Kamar-Taj, they suspect an evil entity controls The Hood’s cloak. Initially dismissive, Riri persists with her family protection mission against The Hood. Unbeknownst to Riri, Zelma imbues the Ironheart suit with magic and sends her off on her journey.
Inadvertently, Riri strikes a bargain with Mephisto to recover N.A.T.A.L.I.E., a decision bound to bring significant consequences.
It appears that Mephisto, using his magic, can go unnoticed by the sorcerers at Kamar-Taj, move about freely on Earth, and make offers to those he deems in need. The Hood, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to be hiding, yet no sorcerer questions him about his powers. Before the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda Maximoff managed to avoid detection as well. This gives the impression that Doctor Strange and his team are not vigilant enough in guarding the realm they protect. It’s unfortunate because the previous Doctor Strange once imprisoned Loki for 30 minutes just for showing up on Earth.
