The MCU Just Recreated a Major Civil War Moment in an Unexpected Place

The Marvel Cinematic Universe consists of multiple films and series, making it tricky to keep up with them all. This is common when a franchise has been around for over 15 years. However, identifying key projects within this universe isn’t hard. If a project includes at least two Avengers members, it’s bound to make a significant impact. For instance, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” concludes S.H.I.E.L.D. and brings back Bucky Barnes. But its successor, “Captain America: Civil War,” takes things up a notch by splitting the Avengers due to the arrival of the Sokovia Accords.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) experiences a pivotal shift with the Civil War, as it significantly contributes to the devastating losses that the franchise’s superheroes experience when Thanos arrives in Avengers: Infinity War. Despite the desire to leave behind such a somber event from its past, the MCU finds itself unable to escape it. Remarkably, the latest animated series even reenacts a memorable scene from Civil War.

Kuda and Tafari Face Their Own Civil War in Eyes of Wakanda

Prior to the release of “Civil War,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe only implied Wakanda and its inhabitants. However, the 2016 movie marked the debut of live-action Wakandans, including King T’Chaka and Prince T’Challa. Later, Wakanda became the setting for “Black Panther” movies and made an appearance in “Avengers: Infinity War.” But “Eyes of Wakanda” takes a new approach by focusing on different War Dogs throughout history, tracking missing vibranium artifacts worldwide. The fourth episode, titled “The Last Panther,” unfolds in Ethiopia during the late 1800s, where it is at war with Italy. Kuda and Prince Tafari navigate the conflict to recover a vibranium axe, but their journey home becomes challenging. They manage to complete their mission, but they encounter a enigmatic enemy who desires their treasure.

Initially, Kuda and Tafari swiftly respond by protecting themselves, managing to hold their ground against their adversary’s superior technology. At a certain point, they collaborate, trading blows against the potential thief while also passing the axe among themselves. The action in this encounter mirrors the fight between Captain America and Bucky against Iron Man in Civil War, and the similarities extend beyond just the choreography. It is later revealed that they were fighting none other than the future queen of Wakanda, who had traveled back in time to retrieve the axe and safeguard her nation. This revelation leaves Kuda and Tafari stunned, leading them into a heated debate about the appropriate course of action once the Black Panther returns to her own time. Fortunately, they manage to come to an agreement, though not all Marvel Cinematic Universe pairs possess their emotional maturity.

The MCU Is Setting the Stage for Another Civil War

In the aftermath of “Civil War,” the original Avengers come together again, setting aside their disputes when the survival of half the galaxy hangs in the balance during “Avengers: Endgame.” However, history tends to repeat itself as another dispute among heroes arises. In “Captain America: Brave New World,” Sam Wilson receives a motivational talk from his friend Bucky that spurs him to vanquish The Leader and rebuild the Avengers. His partner, Joaquin Torres, becomes their first member, with plans to bring in more heroes. Yet, before Sam can act, Bucky takes matters into his own hands by joining the New Avengers, a team assembled by questionable government official Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

Sam believes that the government should have no involvement in deciding who belongs in the Avengers team, so he claims the name for himself and incites a public dispute with Earth’s strongest champions. This feud will escalate in the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday“, where it’s possible that Doctor Doom – a villain who could potentially match Thanos’ power level – may be the main antagonist. If Sam and Bucky wish to avoid a fate similar to Steve and Tony at the end of “Infinity War“, they need to cooperate effectively, like Kuda and Tafari, as Doom might not be inclined to spare half of the galaxy’s inhabitants.
