Competing against characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is challenging for ordinary humans. Life on Earth remains relatively normal until 2012, when the Chitauri invade New York City at Loki’s behest, as seen in “The Avengers.” The Earth’s strongest heroes band together to vanquish the aliens, but the Battle of New York is merely the beginning. Over time, Ultron comes close to annihilating the planet, and Thanos eradicates half of life with a snap. Ordinary individuals lack the abilities or training to handle such extraordinary events, unless they possess a genius-level intellect like Tony Stark or have spent years as a spy. However, there’s another option for Joe Schmoe to make an impact – by obtaining a mysterious serum.
Initially, Johann Schmidt and Steve Rogers are the initial recipients of Dr. Abraham Erskine’s Super Soldier Serum, but they’re not the only ones. Bucky Barnes, John Walker, Bruce Banner, and numerous others also received their extraordinary abilities thanks to Erskine’s groundbreaking work. However, each one of them is walking in the footsteps of a different kind of super soldier – one who demonstrated that humanity has the potential to do more than just watch as stronger beings take over and reap all the rewards.
Eyes of Wakanda Features the MCU’s First Super Soldier
In contrast to many other MCU projects with flashbacks set before the current timeline, “Eyes of Wakanda” stands out by immersing viewers deeply in the past. The second episode, titled “Legends and Lies,” travels as far back as the 12th or 13th century during the Trojan War. In this conflict, Odysseus and his troops are struggling to capture Troy. With each failed strategy, Achilles, the commander of the Myrmidons, becomes more agitated, eager to crush the Trojans. His companion, Memnon, tries to pacify him, assuring him that their triumph will eventually come. Odysseus doesn’t delay in devising a plan that enables his men to enter Troy without engaging in battle.
Inside the Trojan Horse, Achilles and the Myrmidons lie in wait as the Trojans grow careless. With a swift surprise attack on the guards, they swiftly advance, but their progress is halted when a valiant Trojan rings an alarm bell, causing chaos. Despite being outnumbered, the Trojan soldiers, Achilles and his men stand their ground, with Achilles single-handedly holding off at least 20 of them as Memnon retreats from the battlefield. Soon after, Achilles ascends to the upper levels, showing that he has defeated all his adversaries. There’s no Super Soldier Serum within him, but it’s evident that he could fight hand-to-hand with Captain America and his team. It’s regrettable that his tale comes to such a sudden end.
Wakanda Has Been Battling Super Soldiers for Centuries
As a passionate cinephile, I’d rephrase that epic scene like so:
In the heat of battle, I finally confront Memnon in Troy. My companion reveals that his mission is not to fight for Greece, but to recover Helen of Troy’s amulet. This revelation strikes me deeply, as I had always defended Memnon against those who questioned his loyalty.
The ensuing fight sees us locked in a fierce duel, with Memnon holding the upper hand until he unleashes some extraordinary Wakandan technology – a vibranium arm brace. This tech proves troublesome for me due to my lack of durability, but I manage to hold my ground.
However, when Memnon grabs a blade and wounds my heel, rendering me defenseless, I charge at him once more. But alas, for the sake of his people, Memnon is forced to subdue me. Yet, it seems that not only Memnon encounters a super soldier in Wakanda.
In “Captain America: Civil War,” King T’Challa pursues Bucky Barnes, suspecting the super soldier was behind the death of his father, T’Chaka. Their confrontation is intense, and shortly afterward, both Bucky and Steve Rogers (along with Sam Wilson) are arrested. After managing to flee with his old comrade, Captain America, Black Panther targets him next, engaging in a fight at an airport in Germany. The enhancements from the Heart Shaped Herb provide him an edge during combat, though he might not need it since the Dora Milaje, T’Challa’s personal guards, can subdue Bucky without any difficulty in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” carrying only a spear as their weapon.
