Death isn’t always permanent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Surprisingly few characters have truly died, especially considering how many heroes there are. Even the biggest loss in the Infinity Saga was eventually reversed. Because of this, audiences often anticipate fake deaths, close calls, or temporary measures. So when a character actually dies, it has a real impact. The deaths of T’Challa, Natasha, and Tony were all significant, and a recent event in Daredevil: Born Again has added another impactful death to that list. (Warning: Spoilers ahead for Season 2, Episode 4 of Daredevil: Born Again.)
Episode 4 of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 was a shocking turning point. Bullseye tried to kill Kingpin, but instead, Vanessa was critically injured. While she didn’t die, a piece of one of Kingpin’s glass decorations pierced her brain, leaving her in critical condition. The season has been examining different forms of justice, and Bullseye’s actions seem to represent the most brutal outcome possible.
Vanessa’s Death Will Give Us The Worst Version of Kingpin

Calling Wilson Fisk calm would be a huge understatement, but Vanessa grounds him and connects him to a normal life. She’s the main reason he even tries to change his ways – as seen in Echo, he intentionally distanced himself from her to avoid appearing weak. Losing Vanessa is bad enough, but her death at the hands of a vigilante is practically a declaration of war. It’s like provoking a furious, incredibly strong boxer with a serious temper. Simply put, this event will set off a massive explosion.
Mayor Kingpin is a fascinating character, and the story’s connection to real-world issues is strong. However, the most compelling idea is a Kingpin motivated by revenge. If Vanessa were to die – and Bullseye rarely lets anyone live – it would fuel Kingpin’s rage and give his cause a powerful symbol. This would not only unleash his full power, but also rally significant public support for him to eliminate Bullseye, as well as any other heroes or vigilantes who stand in his way.
The latest episode of Daredevil: Born Again is exactly the turning point the show needed as it moves into the second half. While episode 4 was a standout, particularly with the introduction of Bullseye, it was becoming clear that keeping Kingpin confined to a desk, even while pulling the strings, wouldn’t hold our attention indefinitely. Now, the stage is set for him to take a more active – and likely destructive – role.
