Facing concerns that audiences were getting tired of superhero movies and needing to hold things over until bigger releases like Avengers: Doomsday or Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrived, Thunderbolts (The New Avengers) was released. Most people expected it to be either completely forgettable or just okay.
The film was a huge hit with both viewers and critics – it earned an 88% rating from critics and a remarkable 93% audience score (based on over 10,000 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes. It also elevated well-known characters like Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, and the Winter Soldier, while brilliantly introducing new characters like Sentry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios were clearly impressed with Wyatt Russell’s performance as John Walker, also known as Sentry. They were so confident in him that they’d already planned for him and the Thunderbolts to appear in Avengers: Doomsday in December 2027. Russell himself recently told The View that the whole experience still feels unbelievable.
Will It Be Sentry or The Void Who Meets the Avengers?
The scene after the credits of Thunderbolts reveals the team being pitched AvengerZ merchandise by Red Guardian. An alarm then sounds, alerting them to an object entering Earth’s atmosphere. This turns out to be the spaceship carrying the Fantastic Four, who have just finished battling Galactus in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. This sets up several groups that will be involved when Robert Downey Jr. debuts as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.
Even though Bob, now going by Sentry, appears harmless once more, don’t be fooled. He’ll eventually need to use his powers, and it will be up to him and the Thunderbolts team to control him and prevent him from falling apart mentally and becoming The Void again. The big question is whether he can manage it himself, or if his teammates will have to save him – and the world – from his own instability, just like they did in their previous movie.
We don’t yet know which groups will be allies or enemies, but we’re starting to see how things are shaping up. With the X-Men now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four joining the mix, there’s also talk that Steve Rogers – Captain America – will return and play a major role in the upcoming conflict.
That was just a small hint of the massive amount of rumors surrounding Avengers: Doomsday. So, Pullman is understandably surprised and excited to be working with a cast that could be the biggest ever assembled in a movie – even larger than the one from Avengers: Endgame.
