Nick Fury gathers them because Loki has been following the Tesseract and manipulating Erik Selvig’s mind, with Barton joining forces as well. Fury suspects a major threat is imminent and wants to be prepared for all eventualities, so he resorts to some subtle manipulation. Prior to extracting information from Fury, Barton assaults the ship since Loki is imprisoned following his surrender in Germany. The God of Trickery’s escape becomes less of a concern for Iron Man and Captain America as the helicarrier teeters on collapse, leaving Thor as their last hope. The God of Thunder succumbs to one of his brother’s deceits and ends up in a cage, prompting Coulson to act. He seizes a potent weapon designed by S.H.I.E.L.D. after witnessing the Destroyer, pointing it at the villain as a threat. Unfortunately, Loki overpowers Agent Coulson and takes his life. The Avengers mourn deeply and vow to act in memory of their fallen comrade. However, some fans found this death too strategically timed, suspecting that Coulson had more roles to play in the future.

Fans Believed Phil Coulson Was Going to Return to the MCU as Vision

In the early stages, it was hard not to be wary of Agent Coulson due to his uncanny knack for being at the right place at the right time. While his close ties with Fury, who seemed to have insider information, might explain this, it felt as though Coulson was more machine than man, never needing rest or sustenance. When Coulson apparently perished, fans who held such suspicions only grew more convinced that he wouldn’t truly be gone, instead transforming into a superhero. They speculated that Coulson would reappear as Vision, a character introduced years later in Avengers: Age of Ultron. However, the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which starred Coulson, was already underway before that film’s release, and the show took its time to unveil the truth about Coulson’s fate following The Avengers.

In the initial season of ABC’s series, the most plausible reason for Coulson’s resurrection was that he was an android or at least a robot version of the late agent. This theory about him being the Vision persisted until around halfway through Season 1. However, it was later revealed that Coulson had been brought back to life due to Project T.A.H.I.T.I., initiated by Fury, which employed Kree blood to reanimate the agent’s body. This process left him with agonizing memories that needed to be wiped clean.
