The new Marvel series *Wonder Man*, coming to Disney+ on January 27, 2026, will introduce a hero powerful enough to challenge any of the Avengers. This series is part of a recent wave of highly praised Marvel projects – including *Agatha All Along*, *Thunderbolts*, *X-Men ’97*, *The Fantastic Four: First Steps*, and *Ironheart* – that are helping to restore the reputation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after some earlier, less well-received installments.
I’m so excited for *Wonder Man*! It’s being made by the team behind *Shang-Chi* and *Hawkeye*, which immediately makes me think it’s going to be awesome. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is playing Simon Williams, and the cool part is he’s actually *becoming* Wonder Man while trying out for a movie role *within* the MCU! We’ve only seen a little bit of what he can do so far, but honestly, I have a feeling Wonder Man is going to be one of the MCU’s most powerful heroes when all is said and done.

Wonder Man Could Be One of the MCU’s Most Powerful New Heroes

The initial trailer for *Wonder Man* doesn’t reveal Simon Williams’ superpowers, but a short preview from July showed a glimpse of them. His abilities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe appear to be quite different from the comics, where he’s a super-soldier with immense power. Simon Williams debuted in Marvel Comics in 1964’s *The Avengers #9*, where Baron Zemo experimented on him, turning him into a being powered by ions with the goal of infiltrating the Avengers.

In Marvel Comics, Baron Zemo subjected Simon Williams to a series of dangerous experiments involving chemicals, radiation, and a unique energy source called “ionic” energy. These treatments dramatically enhanced Williams’ physical abilities, giving him incredible strength, speed, endurance, and resilience. Zemo also used Pym Particles, pushing Williams’ powers even further and granting him near invulnerability, extended life, and overall improved physicality. Through multiple experiences with death and revival, Williams continued to develop new powers, eventually gaining the ability to fly, project ionic energy blasts, alter his size, and even share his powers with others.
A recent preview for the upcoming *Wonder Man* series showed Simon Williams using impressive powers. He released a powerful energy blast – possibly ionic energy – creating a shockwave, glowing red eyes, and easily shattering a table. Details about his abilities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are still scarce, and the cast is remaining tight-lipped, suggesting big surprises and exciting reveals are coming in Phase 6.
How Does Wonder Man Compare to the Other Avengers in the MCU?

The cast of *Wonder Man* is being tight-lipped about exactly what Simon Williams’ powers will be in the new MCU series. Even actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II dodged the question, playfully suggesting Simon’s power is simply “his craft” (according to *Rotten Tomatoes*). However, the Marvel Comics version of Simon Williams might offer some clues. In the comics, he’s incredibly powerful, possessing the ability to harness and manipulate ionic energy, which grants him immense strength and a wide range of other abilities.

In Marvel Comics, Heinrich Zemo was surprised by how powerful he made Simon Williams when he turned him into Wonder Man – Zemo thought Williams’s abilities were on par with Thor’s. Other heroes, like Captain America, agree, stating Wonder Man is incredibly strong, even comparing him to the Sentry. Wonder Man has demonstrated this strength, famously overpowering the Red Hulk. Because of his immense power, Wonder Man’s introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe could significantly impact the future of the franchise.
Simon Williams, enhanced as a super-soldier, is significantly stronger than both Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson’s versions of Captain America. His power level rivals Thor’s, and he may even surpass the Hulk. Beyond incredible strength, he possesses abilities like near-immortality, the power to heal himself, manipulate energy, shapeshift, and teleport. If Simon were to join the Avengers, he’d be among the team’s most powerful members – potentially even exceeding Captain Marvel in strength. It would be fantastic to see how his character evolves within the MCU going forward.
