The MCU’s Superman Copycat Is More Powerful Than DC’s New Man of Steel

In the new DC Universe crafted by James Gunn, Superman stands as the epitome of power. At the outset of his latest standalone film, it’s revealed that the Man of Steel had never lost a battle until mere moments before the opening sequence, considering he’s been in action for quite some time. As Superman unfolds, Metropolis’ guardian engages various adversaries, ranging from a colossal kaiju to Lex Luthor’s Raptor forces. The only character who poses a challenge is Ultraman, who turns out to be a clone devised by Luthor. With Krypto at his side, Superman manages to vanquish the duplicate, demonstrating that there’s still plenty of potential for growth in our titular hero.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, situated on the opposite side, the team Thunderbolts is introduced, which includes Bob Reynolds, a conflicted young individual linked to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s Sentry Program. Working alongside the Thunderbolts encourages Bob to recognize his potential for doing more good than harm, but he certainly doesn’t shy away from stirring up some trouble. Far from it, the Sentry demonstrates his strength and leaves no doubt that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s take on Superman is already at the height of his powers.

Sentry Really Is Stronger Than All of the Avengers Combined

Valentina aims to develop Earth’s ultimate hero via the Sentry Program, someone powerful enough to take over from the Avengers. Without giving it a second thought, she outfits Bob and declares him a superhero. In no time, Bob demonstrates his prowess by effortlessly handling his previous comrades, the super soldiers. The Thunderbolts choose not to engage with Bob, preferring to survive for another day. However, things take an unexpected turn when Bob decides he doesn’t need Valentina’s guidance, leading Mel to activate the killswitch. Instead of killing Bob, the device summons his other self, the Void – a destructive force that swallows everything in its path.

Thunderbolts* clearly demonstrates that only the Void itself can put a stop to it. Yet, Bob struggles to manage this power, so he confines it, together with his Sentry identity. However, if Sentry were to reappear in the DCU, Superman would be wise to avoid him as their encounter wouldn’t bode well for the Man of Steel. Sentry packs a punch equivalent to a thousand suns, while Superman has shown he can’t withstand such intensity during his battle with Ultraman. What Superman does have working in his favor is that he hasn’t had an opportunity to fully unleash his abilities yet.

Superman Will Become More Powerful as the DCU Continues

As a die-hard movie buff, I’ve got to say, “Superman” sure loves showing off Kal-El’s impressive fighting record. But here’s the thing – it tends to skip over who exactly he’s been squaring off against all these years. It seems like there’s a good chance Superman has been taking on foes that are no match for his power level, and Ultraman is a stark reminder of that fact.

Moving forward in the DC Universe, we can expect some formidable adversaries to enter the scene – Brainiac, Zod, and Darkseid among them. These villains will challenge Superman, pushing him to become even stronger and unlock his full potential. For now, Gunn and Co. might need to swallow their pride knowing that a Superman imitation is giving the original a run for its money!
