The Mighty Nein Is Critical Role’s Magic At Its Best (Review)

After successfully adapting their first campaign with The Legend of Vox Machina, Critical Role now brings the story of The Mighty Nein to life. The series takes a few episodes to fully assemble the adventuring group, but those early installments expertly build the world and introduce a memorable cast of characters. Once the team is together, the story really takes off. While Vox Machina was impressive, The Mighty Nein truly shines, perfectly capturing the charm of Critical Role’s world and its wonderfully flawed, endearing heroes.

Prime Video made a smart choice by releasing the first three episodes of The Mighty Nein simultaneously. It takes a little time to get to know each character and understand how they’ll eventually connect. However, the show never drags, and the incredibly talented cast keeps you fully engaged with both the major events and the smaller, quieter moments. I especially want to highlight how fantastic the actors are.

Charming Yet Flawed Characters You Can’t Help But Love Yasha’s Extremely Small Role In The Season
Slick Action Sequences That Pop Off The Screen
True Character Arcs By Season’s End

The cast of Critical Role truly brings each character to life, with every member shining individually while still working as a team. The early episodes focus on Beauregard, Caleb, Nott, and Fjord, but soon Jester, Mollymauk, and Essek become central figures too. While Yasha doesn’t have a large role in this part of the story – her time to shine comes later in season 2 – whenever she appears, she makes a strong impact.

The show beautifully captures the essence of the original characters and their designs, while bringing them to life with animation. Whether you’re already a fan or new to the story, it’s easy to fall in love with characters like Jester, Nott, and Mollymauk. I was particularly invested in the developing relationship between Caleb and Beauregard, and how it evolved over time. Each character undergoes significant growth throughout the series, and even when they make mistakes, you can’t help but continue to support them.

The characters have a compelling dynamic, feeling like a reluctant family who gradually recognize their need for one another. The show balances sharp, witty arguments – like those between Caleb and Beauregard – with genuinely heartwarming moments between characters like Jester and Mollymauk, or Fjord and Jester. The connection between Caleb and Nott is particularly layered and could easily support its own story.

While the show excels at developing its characters and exploring serious themes, it also delivers exciting and intense action. The magic system is visually stunning, with spells and magical creations leaping off the screen. The fights are incredibly violent, but they’re also dynamic and feel powerfully real.

This season maintains a fast pace from beginning to end, with all eight episodes contributing to the overall story. The finale successfully wraps up some minor plot points while delivering a spectacular magical battle. It also sets up intriguing possibilities for a second season, leaving viewers eager for more.

Fans adore Critical Role’s compelling stories and memorable characters, and The Mighty Nein perfectly exemplifies that. Everyone is eagerly awaiting season two!

The Mighty Nein season 1 is now available to stream on Prime Video.
