Build A Rocket Boy’s game, MindsEye, has been a complete failure, and things have recently taken a turn for the worse.
After recent layoffs and news that around 300 jobs were potentially affected, staff – both current and former – are now claiming that the project’s leaders, including ex-Grand Theft Auto producer Leslie Benzies and co-CEO Mark Gerhard, have consistently shown disrespect and mistreated employees.
A recent open letter from Game Workers describes a troubled development process for MindsEye. It claims the project suffered from chaotic management, with frequent, unplanned changes and a stifling of any feedback from the team.
The letter details several major issues, including a lack of clear communication, excessive overtime, and poorly managed layoffs.
Nearly 100 employees signed a letter detailing their experiences, which included burnout, fear for their jobs, health problems, and disappointment over the unsuccessful launch of a game they had dedicated years to developing.
Finally, the letter outlines several requests, such as a public apology, support for the workers who are still employed, a clear plan to improve workplace conditions, and a fairer process for layoffs.
I remember back in July, everyone was buzzing about Build A Rocket Boy maybe bringing MindsEye back as a way to make things right. But we haven’t heard a peep about it since then, and honestly, this new open letter makes me think things aren’t going well behind the scenes at all. It doesn’t sound like the relaunch is happening anytime soon, or at least, not smoothly.
