Adding Anguirus to Godzilla x Kong: Supernova might fix a problem with the Monsterverse movies. While Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire were billed as team-ups between Godzilla and Kong, the films clearly focused more on Kong’s story.
Although Godzilla won his fights against Kong in their two movies, he didn’t have as big a role in the overall stories. Both films really focused on Kong’s journey, with the human characters’ adventures centered around him. Godzilla appeared at important times, but felt more like a supporting character.
As a lifelong monster movie fan, it’s pretty obvious why this keeps happening. Twice now, the studio has seemed to prioritize Kong over Godzilla, and the reason is always the same: they think audiences connect with Kong and the human characters more easily. Honestly, I worry this same thinking will influence Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, but it really shouldn’t. Godzilla deserves just as much focus!
Introducing Anguirus In Supernova Can Fix The Monsterverse’s Godzilla Problem
While Kong might connect with more people, it’s definitely possible for audiences to feel sympathy for Godzilla. Several films, like Godzilla vs. Destoroyah and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, have shown that even though he’s a massive monster, viewers can still feel empathy for him.
The Monsterverse could expand its story by referencing an Easter egg from Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The film briefly showed an Anguirus skeleton within the ruins of Godzilla’s underwater city, suggesting Anguirus lived there thousands of years ago. This implies, like in the original Japanese films, Anguirus might have been a close friend and ally of Godzilla.
Bringing Anguirus into Godzilla x Kong: Supernova would connect with a growing theme in the Monsterverse: loneliness. It’s already established that both Godzilla and Kong are the last of their kind, and introducing another solitary monster could deepen that emotional element, especially after the events of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
The discovery of other great apes has significantly changed Kong’s life. He now leads a family and tribe, and has formed an alliance with a new Titan named Shimo. With Kong experiencing such positive developments, the focus can now shift to Godzilla, who remains isolated and alone within the Monsterverse.
The new film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, could build on the feeling of isolation hinted at in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, when Godzilla was shown alone in his underwater lair. If the story delves into the history of the Monsterverse, exploring the fate of the ancient city and the creature Anguirus would allow for a more profound look at the sadness within Godzilla’s past.
Just as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire gave Kong a family, completing his story arc, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova could introduce Anguirus by showing there are others of his kind. Making this new Anguirus a friend to Godzilla would provide a heartwarming and fitting end to Godzilla’s next adventure.
