The More I Think About The Fantastic Four: First Steps, The More I Wish One Character Would’ve Had A Bigger Role

Beware, there might be small hints about the plot of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” that could spoil your reading experience. So, take note as you continue, dear readers!

In a captivating manner, The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces the main characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving fans impressed and excited. Directed by Matt Shakman, the movie exudes a blend of retro-futuristic aesthetics and cosmic energy. It stands out in its portrayal of the heroic foursome, with Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm garnering acclaim from fans, while I personally find Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s portrayal of Ben Grimm to be a significant improvement over previous versions. As I reflect on this Marvel film, there’s one character I feel could have been given more screen time for even greater impact.

Which Character Is Underutilized In First Steps?

Despite my fondness for Marvel Cinematic Universe movies (ones I’ve contributed to ranking), it’s hard to deny that Marvel sometimes falls into the pattern of casting renowned actors but then not giving them enough screen time to truly shine. This issue has been noted by actors like Idris Elba, Mads Mikkelsen, and Michael Stuhlbarg. In the case of “First Steps,” Natasha Lyonne seems to be given a smaller role than expected. Known for her charm, Lyonne portrays Rachel Rozman, a school teacher who develops a bond with Ben Grimm. Regrettably, Rachel only appears in a limited number of scenes-one where she talks to Ben on the street and another inside a synagogue where they meet again.

In the depicted image (since there aren’t many pictures of Rachel), Lyonne delivers compelling performances within her scenes. Interestingly, the actress also relished the opportunity to romance her on-screen and real-life friend, Moss-Bachrach. Regrettably, Lyonne’s screen time seems insufficient, which is truly disappointing. Rachel serves as a vivid embodiment of the life that the Furious Five are tirelessly safeguarding. Had her part in the movie been more substantial, she could have significantly deepened the narrative, which abounds with exaggerated aspects.

Ben Grimm’s character could have been developed further if Rachel was present more often. While I appreciate Shakman and the team for not making The Thing overly tragic, a focus on his romantic aspects might have revealed additional layers of his personality. Such exploration would also have enriched Rachel as a character. I found it appealing to imagine them discussing their respective professions, hobbies, and shared Jewish faith. Unfortunately, this was not part of the story told.

What Could The Future Hold For Rachel Rozman?

Although Rachel’s minor part may be disheartening, there could potentially be more of her character featured in future instalments. During Disney’s latest financial meeting, CEO Bob Iger referred to the Fantastic Four as an “original property” and stressed its significance. While Iger didn’t explicitly confirm or deny a sequel, he did emphasize the franchise’s importance, which might suggest that another film could still be in development, given the underwhelming box office performance of First Steps.

Given that point, I’d find it quite astonishing if Lyonne didn’t return for a sequel, given the chance. Shakman could definitely benefit from a second installment to delve deeper into Rachel’s relationship with Ben and perhaps even watch their romance unfold in its entirety.

I’m not just eager for a sequel to “First Steps” but also for Rachel Rozman to be given the recognition she deserves. It’s disheartening to witness talented actors being underutilized in Marvel Studios productions, and I fear that Natasha Lyonne might join this list of underrated MCU actors if appropriate opportunities are not provided.
